10 Facts about Thomas Cup
The Thomas Cup was supposed to start in 1939 but was cancelled due to World War 2. It only began 10 years later in Preston.
Malaysia were the first winners in 1949 and completed a hat-trick by retaining the title in 1952 and 1955. Malaysia also won the title in 1967 and 1992.
Indonesia, who first won the title in 1958, have won it a record of 10 times.
China, after years of isolation, finally made their entry in 1982 by winning the title, beating Indonesia 5-4 in the final. Since then China have won the title in 1986, 1988 and 1990.
The Tomas Cup format of nine matches played over two day swas changed for the first time in 1984 to three singles and two doubles to be played over a day.
The year 1967 marked the debut of Rudy Hartono, who went on to play in six finals. Indonesia won a record of four times in a row in 1970, 1973, 1976 and 1979. Rudy also won the All-England title a record of eight times.
The Thomas Cup Finals have only been held out of Asia twice, in England in 1949 and 1982.
Malaysian skipper Cheah Soon Kit has entered the books as the only shuttler to play in seven consecutive Thomas Cup Finals. The previous record holder was Rudy Hartono who played in six consecutive Finals.
Denmark are the unluckiest finalists since the first Thomas Cup. They had qualified for six finals in 1949, 1955, 1964, 1973, 1979 and 1996 but lost on all occasions.
This is only the second tiem Hong Kong will host the Finals. They wre also the host two years ago when Indonesia won both the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup.
