Moon Over Manhattan

CHAPTER ONE

The Present:

Elisa Maza was standing on the roof of Wyvern Castle with Goliath. It had been a while since they had returned to Manhattan after their journey through the Mists of Avalon.

"You know...  you guys really should be a lot more careful..." Elisa began, "People are seeing you all over town!!  The city's freaked out enough that you exist.. we don't need hundreds of reports coming in about Gargoyle sightings. The police precinct is busy enough..." She said.

"But... Elisa..." Goliath began,  "The clan and I have been rather discreet.  We have only gone out when there are few people, or we have not gone out at all," Goliath explained.

"Well... explain all the 'monster' sightings we've been getting then!" Elisa started.  "People have come running to us, saying there are monsters throwing energy bolts around!"

Goliath furrowed his brow, "That is rather odd. We may be perceived as monsters, but we do not have that kind of power!" The lavender-skinned gargoyle replied.

"Yeah.. well.. it gets weirder! They say that when the monsters attack, these girls in mini-skirts come and dispose of them! What's THAT all about?!"

"Mini-skirts??!" a voice snickered.  A young, red-skinned gargoyle came out of the shadows.

"Brooklyn... it's not a joke!" Elisa said.

"Well.. if the mini-skirted girls are getting rid of them, then what's the problem?" Brooklyn said.  He smiled, "I wouldn't mind meeting these mini-skirted heroines..."

"Brooklyn, you must keep out of sight.  Gargoyles paranoia is all over the city," Goliath said.

"Yeah.. I know.  But I'm not going to stay stuck here every night. I was just about to go for a glide,"  he said as he opened his leathery wings.  "Don't worry, I'll be careful to stay out of sight."

"Just be sure you do," Goliath said. As leader of the gargoyle clan, it was his responsibility to make sure everyone was safe.

Brooklyn jumped off the castle roof and glided on the wind current. "Well... we're going to go for a glide too, Goliath," another voice said.  Three more gargoyles came up to the roof.  Broadway, Angela, and Lexington.

"If you are all going together, Broadway, then you must all be careful.  It is difficult to see one well-hidden gargoyle, but three gargoyles are easier to find," Goliath explained.

"Yeah, we know. Don't worry, Goliath.  We'll be careful," Lexington said.

"Hudson is watching television if you're wondering," Angela explained.

"Yes, thank you, Angela.  Be careful now," Goliath said as the three jumped off the roof and glided away.

Elisa looked up at Goliath, "Well... that leaves us all alone..." she said.

"We can always watch television with Hudson," Goliath said.

"Oh... yay.. Jerry Springer!" She replied sarcastically. "I can think of something a lot more interesting to do..." and with a smile, she walked back inside. Goliath quickly followed.

Brooklyn glided over the city, taking in the people and buildings. He sighed quietly.  "Here we are, trying to protect this city, and they treat us like monsters!" he muttered.  "It's not fair! Is it even worth it anymore??" Then he heard a scream.  The young Gargoyle slowly swooped down to see  what was happening, and saw a pretty green-eyes brunette being held at gun-point. He was surprised to find that the girl beeing mugged seemed angry... not scared.  He found that rather interesting.

"Here I am, a visitor to this country, and this is what happens to me?!" She shouted in a thick, Japanese accent, "I don't think so!" In a swift movement, the girl kicked her assailant. He quickly fell to the ground.   "You have SOME nerve!". She said, and cracked her knuckles angrily.  The man began to get up and the girl quickly went into a spin kick,  knocking him to the ground once again.

Brooklyn watched this with fascination, until he saw a shadow sneaking up behind the girl.  The mugger had a friend.  While the girl was busy fighting the mugger, his buddy was slowing raising his knife. Brooklyn zoomed down, and quickly attacked the other man.

The girl spun around when she heard the noise.  "Nani...?! " she gasped, but she didn't have time to investigate. Instead, she turned her attention back to her mugger and proceeded to punch him out.  Once he was out cold, she turned to the shadows.

Brooklyn struggled with his opponent.  "You like sneaking up behind pretty girls, huh?" Brooklyn said.  "I'm sorry, but I can't allow that in my city!" With a hard punch, his opponent joined his friend on the concrete.

Brooklyn noticed the girl watching him, and slid deeper in to the shadows. The girl spoke to him. "Domo arigato..." she started, bowing slightly. "It means 'thank you very much'.  Who are you?"

"A friend..." Brooklyn replied, then began to walk away.

"WAIT!" the girl called out. Brooklyn turned to face her, still hidden in the shadow.  "I'm Kino Makoto.  Gomen... uh... sorry... I forgot in your language the given name is first.  I am Makoto Kino!  My friends call me Mako," She held her hand out to the shadow.

"I'm Brooklyn... but... I can't shake your hand.  If you see me, you'll freak out."

"Huh?! You can't be as bad as Umino!" Mako said.

    "As... WHO?!" Brooklyn asked.

"He's this nerdy guy who goes to our school," She explained.

"At least he's human..." Brooklyn muttered.

"'At least he's human?' What do you mean, Brooklyn?" Mako asked.

"Promise you won't freak out?" Brooklyn asked.

"Promise! You saved my life!!" Mako replied. Brooklyn slowly came out of the shadows, and Mako gasped.  Then she regained her composure and smiled.  "You shouldn't be so hard on yourself.  At least you're not a youma!" She said happily.

    "A... youma?" Brooklyn asked.

"Youma ... I guess you'd say 'monster'.  But you're nothing like that!  You're kawaii... uh... cute!"

    "Mako!!" A voice called out.

"Mako-Chan!! Where are you?!!" Another voice followed.

She looked at Brooklyn.  "Those are my friends.  Rei, and Usagi.  Guess I better answer them, ne?" she said.  "But stay here, I want them to meet you!"

    "Well... I..." Brooklyn started.

"Rei-Chan.. Usagi-Chan! Over here!" Mako shouted out.  Brooklyn backed into the shadows as two girls came running over to Mako.  One girl had long, black hair, and another girl had her hair done up in two long ponytails.

"Told you she was all right, dumpling head!" The black-haired girl said, patting the two buns on top of her friend's blond head.

"Why are you always so mean to me, Rei!!" The blond girl cried.

"Oh... come on! Don't start guys!" Mako said.

"I didn't start ANYTHING! Rei's the one who called me DUMPLING HEAD!" Usagi started. "Only Mamo-chan can call me that and get away with it!"

"Stop showing him off, Usagi!" Rei shouted.

"I'm not showing him off!!" Usagi insisted.

    "Dumpling Head!" Rei said.

Usagi was getting annoyed, and rolled up her sleeves, "I'll give you Dumpling Head!" She said as she began to walk towards Rei. Unfortunately, she tripped over her shoelace in the process and landed hard on the ground.  "WAAAH!! That HUUUUURT!" She cried.

Rei just looked at her and shook her head, "You are SUCH a klutz! And a crybaby too!!"

"REEEEEEIIIII!!!" Usagi shrieked, and stuck out her tongue as she stood up and brushed her skirt off.  "Nyahhh!"

Rei returned the gesture, "Nyaaah to you too!"

"Usagi-Chan! Rei-Chan! ENOUGH!!" Mako shouted. The two other girls quickly quieted down at Mako's forceful voice.

Soon, two more voices were added to the group, "Usagi, Mako, Rei," the first one said.

"Where are you guys?!"  The second one added.

    "Over here," Usagi called out

The other two girls arrived on the scene.  One had short hair - almost blue - and was followed by a black cat with a crescent moon on it's forehead.  The second girl had long, blond hair with a simple red bow.  She was carrying a white cat, also with a crescent moon on it's forehead. The black cat quickly jumped up on Usagi's shoulder and licked her face. Brooklyn noticed that all five girls looked about 16 years old.

"Great! Ami, Minako! You're here too!" Mako smiled.  "There's someone I want you to meet!" Mako began.  She looked into the shadows, "Brooklyn... come out and meet my friends!" She called.  Reluctantly, Brooklyn came out of the shadows.

    "Uh... hi.." he said.

Rei gasped.  "It's a YOUMA!!" She shouted.  Suddenly, three strips of paper appeared in her hand.  "AKU-RYO   TAI-SAN!!!" She shouted, and was about to throw the paper at Brooklyn.

"NOOO!!" Mako gasped, and quickly grabbed the paper from Rei. "GAH!! HOT HOT!" she cried as the paper burst into flames.  She quickly dropped it and stomped the fire out.  "Why did you do that?!!"

    "It's a YOUMA!" Rei said.

"No he's not! He saved my life!" Mako said, then explained what had happened earlier.

"Let me guess..." Rei started, "He reminds you of your old boyfriend??"

Mako glared at Rei. "You're not funny!" She said. Then she smiled, "Actually... he looks more like Yuichiro! Same hair, don't you think?!"

"He looks NOTHING like Yuichiro!!!" Rei said angrily. Usagi started to laugh, but one look from Rei quickly stopped that.

Brooklyn then noticed the black cat seemed to whisper something in Usagi's ear.  Usagi saw Brooklyn looking at her and the cat.  She smiled nervously.  "Oh... silly cat. Don't mind Luna! She likes to pretend she can talk!" Usagi said quickly.

"Yeah... same with Artemis here." Minako said about the white cat she was carrying.  "They're just two silly kitties, right Usagi?"

"Yup!" Usagi added, then she looked at Ami,  "Have you seen  Mamo-chan?" She asked.

"Mamoru and food.. is that ALL you think about, Usagi?!" Rei asked.

"Hey... she's in love... with BOTH of them!!" Mako said with a smile.

Rei sighed, and put a hand to her forehead,  "I'm going back to the hotel. Maybe I'll keep Michiru and Haruka company!"

"Hmm... don't you think Michiru and Haruka would rather be alone?" Mako started.

    Rei went wide-eyed, "They're both GIRLS, Mako-chan!!"

"Oh, come now, Rei! We all know what's going on with those two! Besides, it's the nineties!!" Minako said.

Rei shook her head, "Fine... then I'll go visit Setsuna!" she said.

"She's probably busy shopping," Usagi replied.

"Well... then I'll visit Hotaru!" Rei started to get annoyed.

"Last I saw, she was playing with Chibi-Usa, " Ami explained.

"Looks like you're stuck with us, Rei-chan!" She giggled.  Rei just grumbled.

"Hey... it's been nice meeting you, Brooklyn!" Mako said.  "Maybe we'll run into each other again.  You should meet the rest of my friends!"  Mako shook Brooklyn's hand.

"Nice to meet you guys too," he said.  "You should meet the rest of my clan!"

"Why don't we get together again tomorrow night then?!  Right here!" Usagi said.  "Or during the day if you prefer! We'll bring everyone else."

"It will have to be at night," Brooklyn began.  "I'll bring my clan as well."

Suddenly, Rei face became serious.  "Guys!!" She gasped.

They all looked at her, "What is it Rei? What's wrong?" Ami asked.

"I sense something... something dark!" Rei started.

Mako looked at Brooklyn, "When Rei says stuff like that, we get worried.  You should get out of here while you can! She can sense things!!"

    "I'll be ok..." Brooklyn started.

"No... please... go.. it's safer," Minako said.

"Yes.. go now! Please Brooklyn!!" Usagi begged.

Brooklyn saw they were all dead serious, and he began to leave... then decided to hide in the shadows, and see what was happening.

    "Is he gone?" Ami asked.

"Hai," the black cat... Luna, spoke.  Brooklyn was stunned.

"Transform everyone.. now!" the white cat, Artemis, spoke as well!

    "Mercury Crystal Power," Ami shouted.

    "Mars Crystal Power," Rei shouted.

    "Jupiter Crystal Power," Mako shouted.

    "Venus Crystal Power," Minako shouted.

"Moon Eternal Power... " Usagi shouted.

"MAKE UP!!!!!" The five girls shouted in unison.

Brooklyn was suddenly blinded by a bright, colourful light coming from the five girls.  When the light disappeared, the girls stood there in different coloured sailor uniforms, complete with Tiaras, mini-skirts, and elbow-high white gloves that fit like a second skin.

"They're the ones everyone's been seeing!" Brooklyn gasped to himself. Suddenly, an angry growl pierced the air, and a hideous creature appeared in front of the girls.

    "It's a youma!" Ami shouted.

    "The monster sightings!!" Brooklyn gasped.

A blue visor appeared around Ami's eyes, and a small computer appeared in her hand.  She began typing away furiously, trying to find the creature's weak spot.

Suddenly, the monster threw an energy bolt at Ami, knocking her to the ground.  Even though she was hurt, she still continued typing.

"You're a hideous creature who attacks for no reason!" Usagi began to shout.  "You've hurt Sailor Mercury, and for THAT I won't forgive you!  On behalf of the moon, I'll punish you!!! ".

Suddenly the creature threw an energy bolt at Sailor Moon, who was knocked to the ground.  She let out a shriek, and Brooklyn almost went deaf.

"For attacking my friends, I, Sailor Mars, will get you!" Sailor Mars shouted, and an arrow of fire shot from her hands, but the creature ducked it.  "I missed!!" She gasped.

"You may have dodged Mars' attack, but you won't get away from Sailor Venus!!" Minako shouted.  "Crescent BEAM!" Sailor Venus threw a boomerang of pure orange energy at the creature.  This too it ducked.  Sailor Venus was embarrassed, "Oops.. spoke too soon..." the she let out a screech as the creature barely missed her with an energy bolt.

Mercury got up.  "Sailor Jupiter... its forehead!! Hit it!!" Mercury shouted to Mako, and distracted the monster.  "Bubble...  SPRAY!!" A bunch of bubbles appeared in Mercury's hands, and she threw them at the creature.  A fog quickly appeared around the monster, impairing it's vision.

"You're going to be VERY sorry, buddy!" Sailor Jupiter shouted to the monster.  She crossed her arms protectively in front of herself, and a small antenna came out from the top of her tiara. "Supreme... THUNDER!!!!" A streak of pure lightning shot out from the rod in her tiara and headed towards the creature.  This hit it's mark.

The monster fell to the ground.

Sailor Moon quickly stood up, and a golden rod  magically appeared in her hands.  A spiral of energy was released from the rod, and it hit the creature -- turning it into dust. The girls cheered.  Then they all jumped towards the sky and, in a flash of light, disappeared.

Brooklyn came out of the shadows. "Woah!!" He started, "Wait 'till the others hear about THIS!!" And with that, Brooklyn climbed up the side of a building, and glided off the roof.

*        *        *

"Well, it seems to me that these monsters are something they've dealt with before," Elisa said when Brooklyn told her the story.

Brooklyn nodded. "No kidding! You should've seen them in action! They totally blew away that youma!"

    "Uh.. youma?" Goliath said.

"Er... that's what they call them.  Mako said it meant 'monster'."

"Perhaps we should meet these friends of yours..." Goliath said.

"I'll take you to them when we awake," Brooklyn replied. The other gargoyles had all come to listen to Brooklyn's story and they nodded in agreement.  The sunrise was coming, and they all took their places.

"I'll come with you guys," Elisa said to Goliath.  He nodded, and took his position.  The sun came up, and the gargoyles turned to stone.

*        *        *

"You have to come with us tonight," Mako said to Haruka and Michiru in their hotel room.  "You have to meet him,"

"I don't have to meet anyone," Haruka said as she ran a comb through her short blond hair.

"Haruka! Come on," Michiru replied.  She stood beside Haruka.  "We should meet this person. Perhaps him and his friends can help us."

"We are all Sailor Soldiers.  We can take care of the enemies ourselves!" Haruka snapped as she put the comb down. "We don't need outside help!"

Michiru crossed her arms.  "Must you always be so stubborn?" she asked.

   Haruka looked at her, "Yes!"

Michiru rolled her sea-green eyes.  "You're being ridiculous," She said.  "Mako-chan is asking you nicely.  Would it really hurt to meet this creature and his friends?"

"Please, Haruka? Come meet him!!" Mako pleaded.

Haruka looked at her and sighed, "Fine.. but only because you're so cute!" She smiled.

    Mako looked slightly uncomfortable.

"Stop teasing her, Haruka!" Michiru scolded.

"Are you jealous?" Haruka asked Michiru with a sly smile.

Michiru shook her head, "Come on.  Let's talk to the others," Then she looked at Mako, "Is Usagi with Mamoru?"

"Hai... last I saw," Mako answered.

Michiru nodded back, then smiled.  "Those two make such a cute couple!" She said.

Haruka put an arm around Michiru's shoulders, "Yes, like us, ne?"

"Not when you're being a stubborn person!" Michiru replied.

Haruka rolled her eyes and sighed, "I SAID I'd go, didn't I?!"

Suddenly, a pink blur ran into the hotel room and hugged Mako. "Mako-chan! I don't like the food here! I like your cooking better!!"

Mako smiled. "Well, Chibi-Usa-chan, when we get back to Japan I'll make you a nice bento box!" Mako said as she patted the little pink-haired girl on the head. "Where are Setsuna and Hotaru?" Mako asked.

"Hotaru's coming.  She can't run as fast as me..." Chibi-Usa smiled.

Soon, Hotaru came through the door of the room, "Chibi-Usa-chan..." Hotaru started, gasping for breath.  "I cannot keep up with you.  You know that,"

"You're older then me, Hotaru," Chibi-Usa said, "You should be faster then me!"

The pale, purple-haired girl was still gasping for breath.  "I am much weaker then you, Chibi-Usa-chan.  You know I am often ill..." she said, and let out a small cough.

The little girl let go of Mako and hugged Hotaru, "Sorry... I forgot!" She said.

Soon, a graceful woman in her twenties with long, dark-green hair came into the room.  "Is this what you teenagers do? Hang around and talk all day?" She asked with a smile.

"Mako-chan had something to tell us, Setsuna," Haruka said.

Setsuna looked at Mako, "Is it related to our current mission?" She asked.

"It could be," Mako replied.  "I may have found some people who could help us.  But I'll tell you when Usagi, Mamoru and the others get here."

"Usagi is always late, you know that!" Rei said as she came through the door.  She was followed by Ami and Minako.  "Especially if she's with her 'Mamo-chan'!!"

"Enough, Rei!" Haruka snapped, "Why must you always be so hard on her??!"

Rei sighed and hung her head, "I don't mean to be.. it's just that.. well..  I want her to be more responsible! I mean... she's a Sailor Soldier. She needs to grow up and act like it..."

"You're very protective of her, aren't you Rei-chan?" Michiru said softly.  "Like a sister..."

    "I .. guess..." then she shrugged, "I don't know..."

"Hey everyone! We're here!!" Usagi said cheerfully.  She came through the door with Mamoru.

"Usako told me about your friend, Mako. Do you really think he could help us?" Mamoru asked.

"I don't know... but it's worth a try!" Mako said happily.

"But then we'd have to reveal our identities to him," Ami said.

"He already knows," Rei replied. The others looked at her.

"What do you mean?" Usagi asked, worried.

"Well... he knows about us five anyway..." Rei continued. "He watched us fight the youma. I
sensed he was still there. It's no big deal, though.  We're in America, not Japan.  Our families and friends won't find out.  Besides, I don't think Brooklyn is in any position to say anything other then to his clan.  The people here don't really like his kind...  it's a shame,"  Rei was quiet for a moment, then suddenly her eyes went wide and she looked around slowly.

"Rei-chan," Ami started, "What is it?"

    "Something is here!!" Rei replied.

Suddenly, Hotaru's face became blank and she stared off into space. "It is coming..." she started, "... soon!!"

The others all looked at her, "Hotaru-chan?!" Chibi-Usa said.

    "It is coming..." Hotaru repeated.

    "Hotaru-chan!" Chibi-Usa repeated, "What's coming?!"

"The dark one!" Hotaru said. Her eyes were glazing over.

"Hotaru-chan!!" Usagi grew concerned, "What's wrong?! Your eyes..." Mamoru put his arms protectively around Usagi.

Suddenly, a cold blue light surrounded Hotaru's body.  "Hotaru!!" Chibi-Usa cried.

Hotaru let out an agonizing scream as the strange light began taking her energy away.

As soon as it had come, the light disappeared. Hotaru collapsed to the ground.

A quiety laugh echoed throughout the room, but no one was paying attention. All were concerned for Hotaru.

Chibi-Usa ran up to a fallen Hotaru, "Hotaru-chan?!!!" She cried, kneeling beside her friend.  Hotaru's skin was raw and pink. Almost as if it had been burned.

Hotaru looked up weakly, "Chibi-Usa-chan... " She whispered, "My Friends..." she couldn't finish her sentence. Hotaru had passed out.

"HOTARU-CHAAAAAAAN!!!" Chibi-Usa cried.  "Heal yourself!!" Chibi-Usa pleaded.  "You have that ability!! You are the only person who can heal her own wounds! DO IT!! PLEASE!!"

Haruka ran to Hotaru and felt her pulse.  "She's still alive, but very weak! We have to get her to the hospital! Michiru, call an ambulance. Quickly!" Haruka ordered.  Then she looked at Chibi-Usa, who was crying.  "We know Hotaru-chan can heal her own wounds... but it will take her time!  She's injured, and you know she isn't that strong to begin with.  Don't cry, Chibi-Usa... I'm sure she'll be all right...."

The ambulance came, and took Hotaru to the nearest hospital.  After making up a story to explain Hotaru's injuries, the nine remaining girls watched the ambulance leave.  "Hotaru-chan..." Chibi-Usa whispered.

"She said the dark one was coming," Setsuna started, "Without Sailor Saturn, there are only nine of us. Yet the youmas seem to be many..." Setsuna shook her head, "We are greatly out numbered..."

Usagi put an arm around Mamoru's waist, "There are ten of us," she said as she looked up at him.  "We have Tuxedo Kamen!"
