| Sharks and rays, and other fish make up the Chondrichthyes. Chondrichthyes are fish with no true bone but have cartilage. the oldest known chondrichthyes were 450 million years old. Chondrichtyes fish today can be risky preditors (shark) or harmless fish who dine on mullusks. Many of the shark and ray species are fished. Preservation of the whole body of a cartilaginous fish only takes place under special conditions so a complete fossil is very very hard to come by. |
