This class,Pelecypoda, contains the mollusks known as bivalves, clams oysters... ext. They have shells made of two pieces known as "valves". In most, the valves are the same size, but in some species, such as the oysters, the upper "valve" is larger than the lower "valve". Two large muscles, called adductors, hold the valves together. Pelecypod shells vary greatly in size, color, and deceration. The freshwater seed shells are among the smallest known Pelecypod, being less than .1 in. while the shell of the giant clam may be 4 ft. in length. |
