This small class of marine mollusks includes 200 species of burrowing Mullusks commonly known as the "tusk shells". The shell is long, tusk-shaped, and open at both ends of the shell. Thread-like tentacles hang from the head and are used for gathering the microscopic creatures that Scaphopoda feed upon. Most scaphopods are tiny, usually only several inches long. They are found in both shallow and deeper waters; they burrow into the bottom, with only the upper opening sticking above the surface of the sand to alow waist products to exscape. |
