Long ago, El Físico Nuclear filled the world with bizarre creatures that apparently broke the rules of biology as we know them (but not as they were known then). He did this to enlighten, amuse, and confuse us. Such creatures are the basis of such books as The Travels of Sir John Mandeville. Now that all of the world is known (at least as well as it can be known) he must resort to alternate time lines in order to carry out his experiments. This book, After Man: A Zoology
of the Future features the results of some of his experiments. The goal of these efforts is not known, though many suggestions have been put forward: they are an attempt to bring forth a perfect organism, they are efforts to create a helpmeet for The Physicist, they are his punishment for having destroyed the ecosystem of Zagros VII. Each of these hypotheses is either unprovable or contradicts the known evidence.
Very few few humans have been fortunate enough to actually see such creatures. Two of our species who have been exceptionally lucky are Dr. Lao, whose circus is described (by way of moral anecdotes) in Charles Finney's The Circus of Dr. Lao, and Mr. David Wilson, curator of the Museum of Jurassic Technology, who has managed to collect many odd and hitherto unseen objects.
