BOOK REPORTS / REVIEWS

Home Directory FRAMED?

A book report summarizes a book's contents, scope and style. A book review is a broad sketch of the contents and evaluates or criticizes the author's success or failure bases partially on qualifications.

List author, title, date published. e g Soul on Ice civil rights in the 1960s, Grapes of Wrath 1930s depression years; type of book e g biography, mystery, while mentally comparing it to others you've read. What are the author's qualifications to write on the subject? What is his purpose - inform, persuade, entertain? - and scope? Is special knowledge needed to understand the book?

Incorporate a brief description of the contents, describing plot's essential features. Depth of characters, motivations, recurring thetmes if any, conflict and how resolved. Judge the book as to how well or poorly it succeeds in its objectives and if it meets the standards you applied to it. Are your standards fair, too rigid, too lenient? Did you intereest the reader in the book or discourage him? Are the book's ideas, structure and style compatible with the author's intentions and readers' comprehension? Quote specific short passages to support your criticism and connote a flavor of the author's writing and justify your views. Don't be too detailed or lengthy in your analysis. What is the book's major contribution? YOur opinion should be definite and clear. Avoid abstract terms e g "interesting."

CONCLUSION final paragraph, accentuate your review's chief point and suggest how your reader might respond. Are you concise, persuasive, fair?
