PrefaceChapters of the Resource Manual The Mid-America Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel (MAEOPP) Emerging Leaders Institute (ELI) Class of 2000 met several times between November 1999 and November 2000 for professional leadership training under the guidance of ELI Trainer Jonathan McKenzie. In the fall of 1999, MAEOPP President, Marc Malone, presented the ELI class with a set of presidential charges to be addressed throughout the year. First, the ELI Class of 2000 was to be given a practical leadership training experience. Second, they were to be taught about all aspects of leading non-profit organizations and state/regional TRIO associations. Finally, the training experience was to be chronicled and placed in a “Resource Manual for TRIO Associations” and other Non-Profit Organizations. All presidential charges were achieved; thus, this resource manual is the result of the ELI Class’s training experience and efforts. The authors recommend this manual to all persons who wish to form a non-profit organization and aspire to assume leadership positions within the TRIO community. This resource manual is organizational in nature, meaning that it can assist interested parties in creating and maintaining a successful non-profit organization by presenting general guidelines that apply to a variety of non-profit entities. This manual speaks to a broad audience of TRIO Associations and professional organizations that are interested in incorporation, gaining tax exemption, pursuing funding sources, or generally strengthening their organizational structure. The information presented in this manual is well researched and has been derived from experienced non-profit business owners, city and state officials, and TRIO professionals. Readers of this manual should come away with a specific set of thoughts and instructions that will enable them to form and maintain a strong non-profit organization.
