  1. A RECENT REVIEW
  2. 09/01/2003, Loonees Comedy Club.
  3. By James Bodonyi (special to Anarchy Magazine)

  4. Eli Cook’s performance on a warm, humid, Colorado night was a fear-inspiring diatribe of sarcastic wit that blew the minds of the hundred some-odd people in the audience. Known for his cynical look at the dregs and imperfections of the world, Cook came out shooting from the lip.
  5. Wearing an obviously stolen Hewlett Packard “Imagine” work shirt, Cook quickly launched into his profanity-laced, acidic routine about traveling with Muslims on airplanes. The routine, while superficially funny, seemed to carry some personal weight, as if Cook had truly experienced a terrifying flight next to a Muslim man in his own life.

  6. For most of his set, Cook played the audience like a fiddle, making askew, but razor-sharp points while cloaking his morbid observations in robes of comedy. By the end of the show, Cook had the audience right were he wanted them, confused, laughing idiotically and thirsty for more sado-masochistic comedy.
  7. Stupefied, feeling the stinging truth of Cook’s comments, the audience could do nothing but erupt laughing or die crying. They chose the former. As Cook announced “God loves you all,” and sauntered off the stage, the energy was almost tangible, and it was quite obvious to anyone in the club that a future angel of comedy was getting his wings.
