For Mike Lamon, growing up in a California beach town, surfing and driving seem as necessary as breathing. He quarrels constantly with his father over the motorcycle he wants after he gets his learner's permit and about the dune buggy he finally buys. Mike's first romance and trouble with a bullying football player add to his worries. His older brother Pat has his own troubles with the draft and his conscience. Mike's father and preoccupied older brother fail to understand him. Tensions build.

Mike's only release comes when he drives his buggy over the high sand desert stretching for twenty miles back from the sea. The mysterious beauty of the shifting sands, particullarly by moonlight, brings him peace. Then one night Mike races his buggy over the dunes and skirting the surf on the beach, feeling the usual euphoric freedom. An accident, not really his fault, acts as the catalyst that allows Mike, his father, and brother to understand each other again.
