About Bone Marrow Transplants (BMTs) and Peripheral Blood Stem Cell
Transplants (PBSCT)
In a BMT or PBSCT, the patient's existing bone marrow is treated with high
dose chemotherapy and/or radiation (known as conditioning). Following that,
stem cells or bone marrow that have been collected earlier from the patient
or which are harvested from a donor are given to the patient. The donor
can be a relative or an unrelated person, but the tissue type must exactly
or closely match that of the patient.
