September 1999 Issue
Ah, the joys of buying school supplies, washing the last grains of beach sand from your scalp, shopping for Christmas ornaments in Sams and Costco... wait a minute... Christmas? At the end of August?

NotTheNews is an irreverent look at life in Merida Yucatan, Mexico; from a neurotic foreigner's point of view.

Link of the Month

Each month, a specially selected and researched link that either stands out for it's humor (!) or it's actually worth a read, usually to do with Merida and/or its environs... This month, a rebellious little site not on Merida, but rather the country as a hole:

"What the Clinton administration has failed to understand is that the the Mexican system is hopelessly, most likely irredeemably corrupt. The Americans continue to to hope that by nudging this rotten giant, it will gradully change for the better...The problem is that Americans ask the wrong question about Mexico: 'Is there no one honest down there?' Of course there is. Most Mexican officials are scupulous. Unfortunately, they work in an outdated system of single party rule that compels all too many honest men and women to countenance and eventually
conspire in corruption. The real question, then, is how to fix this political machine."

Jorge G Castaneda - National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM)

This quote and more interesting stuff can be found at El Toro's page:

And if you can't understand all this english, resulting in your getting upset with the author and foreigners in general, try reading the equally critical page on life in Merida written by one of it's more observant inhabitants... the famous X'tabay!
