After over 13 years of being apart, ELP returns with the reunion album Black Moon. The album combines all of the band trademark styles with the new sonic landscapes of the '90's. It starts off with two rock-ish songs "Black Moon" and "Paper Blood." Both songs are written by all three members of the band. Although they aren't anywhere close to the rock off the earlier albums, these two and the Emerson/Lake song "Better Days" are still pretty good. The band also plays "Burning Bridges," which was written by producer Mark Mancina. This could also be argued as the best song on the album.
Lake also has three ballads on the album that are just great. "Affairs of the Heart," co-written by Geoff Downes, "Farewell to Arms" and "Footprints in the Snow" show off the accoustical guitar backed with synths and drums. Emerson also has his moment in the sun with an arrangement of Prokofiev's "Romeo & Juliet," the synth-led "Changing States" and the piano solo "Close to Home." All of these three are just amazing as well. Even though ELP is not as cutting edge as in their earlier albums, these songs still hold up.
