Social Interaction: Decline of the Traditional Rationale for Joining an Elvis Fan Club

- by Dr John Walker

Abstract: This paper examines the impact of the Internet on the operations of traditional, social based Elvis fan clubs and the ineffectiveness of most clubs because of their small, locally based structural arrangements. It raises issues of the need of some fans for social interaction and how the Internet is resulting in a rich-poor dichotomy of information elitism and information marginalisation that allows some identities/clubs to assume influence with key players in the 'Elvis decision-making' equation.
