In 2000, as a sophomore at Haverford Collge, I realized that quality babysitters were scarce on the Main Line. At the time I was babysitting for a wonderful family and was very happy, but I wanted to work more. I could not, however, find more work without feeling as though I was abandoning or betraying the family I currently worked with. My current clients were hesitant to give my name to friends searching for sitters, fearing that I would no longer be available for them. Meanwhile, I found that many of my friends were interested in babysitting, they simply had no idea how to go about getting work.
I started Main Line Sitters, a babysitting referral service, in order to bridge the gap I found to exist between parents and sitters. I began by distributing the names of friends I knew to the friends of my clients. Soon, I was receiving numerous calls per day from parents desperately seeking sitters. It wasn't long until all the sitters in my initial pool had so much work that I had to begin recruiting to keep up with demand.
Now, nearly four years later, Main Line Sitters has worked with over 600 families on the Main Line and nearly 1,000 sitters from such colleges as Haverford, Bryn Mawr, Villanova, St. Joseph's, University of Pennsylvania, Temple, Rosemont, Immaculata, Neumann, Rutgers, and even the Lutheran Theological Seminary. While the service has grown, its mission remains the same: to successfully match parents and sitters in a supportive, caring environment. Sitters have the opportunity to take on as much work as they need and parents feel secure that when they need a sitter, MLS is there.
