Tuesday, September 2nd 2003This week at work, I am in the office vortex. The oldest employees work right along side the newest employees in this little stretch of hallway, and all of the office gossip is centered on the two lawyers (on partner, one recent aquisition) near whom I am working. This is the equator of the office. The gossip of the week is twofold. First, one assistant is absent today (and likely all week) because her husband died just yesterday of cancer. People have been calling all day asking for her address so they can send flowers and notes and such. Second, one of the two lawyers in this stretch of hallway has been waiting for his wife to give birth since last week. He's been coming in at odd times of the day, dictating like mad to keep his mind off the baby, and his moods swing from giddy to incredibly irritated. Tomorrow he will be a father for certain, if not tonight. And that's all everyone talks about. There's this line of emotion going through the middle of the hall - on one side the well-wishers pass by the lawyer's office, on the other pass those looking to call the secretary and ask how she's doing. I'm not sure whether this is the office tragicomedy or a Beckett play come to life. But it sure is something.
