Medieval Re-enactment Organizations

These historical re-enactment organizations recreate medieval history through various eras from 850 A.D. to 1450 A.D. While authenticity standards vary from group to group, they both share a love of history and a desire to share what they learn with the public.

Journey through the Past with Markland

Established in 1969 by five friends attending the University of Maryland-College Park, the Markland Medieval Mercenary Militia (or Markland, Ltd.), has is still re-enacting history, hosting demonstrations of medieval martial arts and crafts, appearing in various historical documentaries, etc. The "Battle of Hastings", our first battle re-enactment is still being held to this day. Various sub-groups of this organization re-create historical periods from 850-1450 and cover such geographical areas as England, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Poland, etc.

"Come Row with Us", the Longship Company

Recreating the life and time of Vikings during 850-1066 A.D., the Longship Company is the proud owner of two reproduction Viking vessels - the Fyrdraca, a 33 foot longship; and the Gyrfalcon, a 16 foot ferring boat. Members of the Longship Company take part in numerous events including: the 1000th Anniversary celebrations of the Viking colony at L'anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland in late July, 2000, demos at the Smithsonian Museum as part of the Viking exhibit in Washington, D.C., the St. Patrick's Day parade in D.C. in March. We are always looking for places to share what we've learned about the Vikings.
