Any issue with both Wolverine and Sabretooth is worth picking up, just so you don’t miss anything. This issue kicks it off with Sabretooth being hired by some mysterious hombre who he recognizes just before he’s gassed unconscious. Speculation? Who would know what to use to specifically harm Sabretooth and not himself and extremely piss off Sabretooth at first recognition. I have two guesses, Sinister, a stretch since he could just clone another Sabretooth. Or what I’m hoping it is, one of the Weapon X scientists. This POSSIBILITY ALONE will have me picking up the next issue. The fight with this Mr. X guy might not be too bad if the art stays the same either. My advice to Frank Tieri is say ta ta to T&A, and yes, we all knew that’s what the A and T stood for however hard you tried not to say it that way, and bring on Sabretooth!
We start off this issue with Wolvie shackled up so when he pops his claws he guts himself. It just makes sense; if you can’t contain him, make him hurt himself so you can get out of Dodge. He also has a ball in his mouth, a small homage to Pulp Fiction…I can dig it. Yes, we open to Wolvie in this condition being offered none other than eggs benedict. Mr. X decides to let Wolvie live because they’re both killers and asks him to do some more killin’ with him. Insert political joke here… I think it was just because they didn’t know how to kill him with the healing factor… So Wolvie is given a contract that specifically states that he can no longer call himself “the best there is.” You can imagine how the fur ball reacted so he gets gagged and is forced to listen to the origin of Mr. X, which ultimately made me gag. I won’t force you through it here; just know that he likes his killin’. Having heard all of this, Wolvie busts loose and commences the obligatory butt whupping, which lasts until one of Mr. X’s goons smacks him to next Tuesday, or actually a raft in the ocean. He goes back with Nightcrawler to find the island he was on but all is gone. Unlike Kurt, who was supposed to be absent for a while, I won’t complain about that one, those two paired up is as good as it gets, but in this case, they deserved a better issue.
We start out with the very paranoid Senator Drexel Walsh; hiding out in his mansion with the security wicked tight. The Senator, fearing all of the “accidental” deaths going on seems to have an ace up his sleeve, a disk of information (a floppy disk? Get with the times guys, draw a Zip disk!) Containing something interesting. Just as the Senator calls The Daily Bugle, the phone line’s cut and he sees bodyguard guts on every monitor. Then we see psycho Wolvie come slicing through the door, laughing and slashing the Senator into 200lbs of ground chuck, and then he wakes up in bed.
Wolvie hits the road; worried this is some sort of after effect from being Death. Next there’s a big thud on the roof of his SUV so he does the only rational thing, wraps it around a tree. Enter my favorite X-Man the Beast for the gratuitous hero vs. hero violence as the Beast tries to pound out of Logan whatever’s bugging him. We end with 2 shockers:
1) Sabretooth is getting his adamantium back from whom I’m assuming the people who gave it to him before. (I still think it’s the Weapon X people again!)
2) Wolvie sees his mug on TV standing over the man he killed in his dream.
Overall Grade: A (Best storyline in this book since #150!)
