Another Disneyland classic. Great more for its cool atmosphere and the Abominable Snowman than for its rather bumpy ride.

. . . All right. I'll admit I was a wuss as a kid, but didn't the Abominable Snowman scare you too? I still have the reflex to close my eyes and duck when he comes around. . .

i would always go to disneyland on my birthday. when we got to the matterhorn, i was terrified of the snowmans-- more than the haunted mansion. (though i was scared of that too). i would invite my best friend, nicole.... i would always tell her to scream really loud once we aproach[ed] the snowman. she would always sit in front of me so i would have time to close my eyes. that was the most memerable of all my experiences.

pointless trivia

  • Walt Disney's mountain was the first thrill ride in the park.
  • The Matterhorn was refurbished in 1978 to include the scenes involving the Abominable Snowman and new bobsleds that doubled the ride's capacity.
  • It is a 1/100 scale model of the "original," measuring 147 feet.(Disneyland Guide Book, 1994)
  • No, it's not an urban legend. The Matterhorn does have a half-court basketball court in it's attic. (Mouse Tales)
  • The "lost mining expedition" inside the mountain is dedicated to former Walt Disney Company President, Frank G. Wells, who passed away in a helicopter accident in 1994. Mr. Wells had climbed the highest mountain on six of the seven continents. (Disneyland - Memories of a Lifetime) - search for it on amazon.com
  • Incidentally, the Matterhorn is only the 5th tallest peak in Europe (not counting the Caucasus range in Russia). Of those five, though, it was the last to be conquered with the first climber reaching the summit in 1865.
