The Iguanodon had four fingers and a conical thumb spike on each hand. The Thumb spike was perpendicular to the other fingers. And it may have been used for defense or in obtaining food. It was a herbivore or plant eater. It probably hate cycads or other prehistoric plants. The Iguanodon had a horney, tough toothless beak, and tight-packed cheek teeth.
It had two long legs and two short arms. He was able to walk on all four or could run on his two legs. It was relatively fast, about 15-20 km/hr. It had three toed feet with hoof like claws. The Iguanodon was 30 feet long, 16 feet tall and could weigh up to 5 tons. Its tail was flat and stiff.
It is believed that the Iguanodon was a herding animal. A bonebed was found in Blegium, were dozens Iguanodon fossils were found together. This suggests that they congregated during their life.
The Iguanodon was from the Ornithischian class, ornithopod suborder, and the Iguanodontid Family.
The Iguanodon was from the Ornithopod class whose intellegence was midway among the Dinosaurs. (In relation of body mass to brain mass).
The Iguanodon was from the Early Cretacious Period, at the end of the Mesozic Era. As the supercontinent Pangaea was beginning to break. The Iguanondon managed to spread to all continents except for Antarctica.
The first Iguanodon was named by Gideon A. Mantell in 1825. He noticed that the tooth of the Iguanodon was similar to the modern iguana except for being larger. Thus the reason he named it Iguanodon, iguana toothed. Hundreds have been found around the world expecially in Belgium, England, Germany, North Africa, and the United States.
