Sailor Moon 1, Act 1: Bunny a.k.a. Sailor Moon

The story begins with Serena (Usagi), or “Bunny,” a fourteen-year-old girl, waking up, late as usual. Bunny rushes off to school while complaining that she is still tired and hates school. Suddenly she hears a “squish” and realizes that she has stepped on a poor kitty’s tail. She immediately feels bad and tries to kiss the kitty, but it bashes her with its claws. Bunny notices that there is a band-aid on its forehead. Suddenly the bell rings and she runs off to school. Bunny’s teacher, Ms. Patricia Haruna, screams at Bunny for being late again. Bunny feebly tries to explain about the kitty in the street, but Ms. Haruna yells at her for her lousy grades and shoves a paper in her face. Bunny sees that it is her latest quiz with a big red “30” on it. Melvin (Umino), the class nerd, asks Bunny how she did on the quiz while Bunny’s best friend Molly (Naru) chides Bunny on how much she porks out. Melvin brags about his good grade and Molly tells him he is obnoxious. Bunny admires Molly and her grade to herself.
At lunch, Bunny is talking with Yumi, another friend, and Molly. They are talking about the jewelry store robbery the night before. Melvin breaks in to say that “Sailor V,” the town idol, nabbed the thieves. As Melvin rambles on about Sailor V, the girls talk about the jewelry store’s beautiful stones. Molly says that her mother’s jewelry store is having a big sale and invites them to check it out. At the store, the girls admire the rubies and diamonds. There are a lot of people at the store, and Molly’s mom welcomes the girls. Molly and Bunny are taken aback by Molly’s mom’s aggressive attitude as she packs people into the store. Molly’s mom laughs evilly to herself as she thinks about all the energy that she is going to collect here.
Meanwhile, Bunny is thinking to herself that she wants a jewel, but she reasons that her dad won’t buy her anything with a grade like a 30. She decides to leave and throws her quiz over her shoulder. It lands in the face of a tuxedo-clad guy. He calls her “Cow-tails” and tells her to try a wastebasket next time. Bunny screams that her hair buns aren’t “cow-tails, they’re pig-tails, stupid!” Then the guy notices her grade, a 30, and tells her that she’s the stupid one. Bunny yells that she’s had enough and leaves. She notes his tuxedo and how he thinks he’s so cool. The guy is noticing the rather large jewelry store. He thinks he can find the “Silver Imperium Crystal” here.
Meanwhile, Bunny is muttering to herself about her lousy grade. She sees a Sailor V poster and wishes she was more like her. She decides to play one little game at Crown, the video arcade. Andrew (Motoki), the arcade guy, stops by to check on her game. Bunny thinks he’s cute. Suddenly they hear a meow as the black cat from before comes in. Andrew says that the cat’s been hanging out here for a few days now, while Bunny makes fun of its “crescent moon bald spot.” The cat stares at her. Bunny gets scared and heads home. At home, Bunny’s mom asks how she did on her quiz. Bunny’s mom unfolds the quiz to reveal the grade—a 30. Bunny’s mom kicks her out of the house in a rage. Bunny’s younger brother, Sammy (Shingo) kicks her for getting Mom ticked off again. Bunny tries to kick Sammy but instead kicks the door. She cries and bangs on to the door to get in. Bunny’s mom finally lets her in.
Somewhere else, we see the guy in the tuxedo looking at the entrance of a jewelry store...
Inside the jewelry store, Molly’s mom is cackling to herself as energy fills a cylinder. Elsewhere, one of the girls who bought jewelry at the store is fainting and saying that she’s been tired ever since she left that shop. Molly’s mom is laughing about her brilliant plan: substituting energy sapping gems for real jewels. Suddenly, she is interrupted as Molly walks into the room to find her supposed mother grinning evilly at her.
Inside Bunny’s room, Bunny decides to take a nap instead of doing her homework. In Bunny’s dream, she is Sailor V inside the video game. Suddenly she sees a monster, but she defeats it. Then she rescues Andrew, who is holding the black cat. She saves the life of the crescent moon bald spotted kitty. Suddenly she wakes up as something scratches her face and she screams in pain. The cat tells her that it isn’t a bald spot, and that was a rude thing to say. Bunny is in shock as the cat goes on to tell her that it has been searching for her, and introduces itself as Luna. She thanks Bunny for removing the band-aid, because with it on, she couldn’t talk. The cat continues; she is glad that she found Bunny, because she was becoming concerned that she wouldn’t. Bunny doesn’t believe her and tries to go back to sleep, thinking this is all a dream. Luna shouts that it isn’t a dream, and decides to prove it to her. She gives Bunny a special brooch with a crescent moon on it. Bunny immediately jumps up and puts it on, squealing about how pretty it is. Luna yells at Bunny to pay attention, then continues, asking her if she’s noticed all the strange events lately like unsolved crimes. She tells Bunny that she is the chosen warrior, and that it is her mission to find her team and destroy the enemy. Suddenly Bunny’s brooch begins to glow and Luna tells her to shout out “Moon Prism Power Make-up!” and Bunny does, and she transforms. Bunny is completely surprised, looking at her new clothes and goggles. Suddenly, one of the jewels covering her “meatballs” begins to flash and she hears Molly crying out, then looks in her goggles and sees Molly’s mom trying to strangle Molly. Luna asks if she believes her yet, and Bunny says that she doesn’t understand this but she has to save Molly. Molly is crying out for help, saying that her mother’s trying to murder her. “Molly’s mom” says that she isn’t her mother and that her real mother is tied up in the basement (and a quick shot is shown of Molly’s mother tied, gagged and struggling). Then her face contorts into a monster’s. The guy in the tuxedo is seen in the shadows. Just then, Bunny bursts into the room, yelling at the monster to get off Molly. The tuxedo guy is surprised, and the monster asks who she is. Bunny introduces herself as the champion of justice and defender against evil, Sailor Moon. The monster says it’s never heard of anything called Sailor Moon and tells all her slaves to wake up. Everyone who bought the energy-sapping jewelry from the store immediately gets up and walks to the store like zombies. One of them attacks Sailor Moon, who is knocked to the ground and cuts her knee. Seeing the blood, she realizes that this isn’t a dream. Luna jumps on her and tells her she’s got to fight. Bunny doesn’t think she can do it, and, scared, she cries that she just wants to go home. Her high-pitched shrieks make the zombies fall and the monster cry in pain. The tuxedo-clad guy steps out a little, and Sailor Moon hears a voice telling her not to cry, because now is her chance. Luna tells Bunny to use her tiara to attack. Bunny removes her tiara and throws it at the monster while shouting “Moon Frisbee!” The tiara hits the monster and it turns into dust. Bunny can’t believe what she just did. Suddenly she hears the voice again. It says, “I didn’t find the Silver Imperium Crystal here, however I enjoyed the show.” Bunny turns and sees the guy in the tuxedo sweeping away. As Bunny watches, he tells her his name is Tuxedo Mask and that he won’t forget her. Bunny blushes and she thinks that such a mysterious guy is cool. Luna congratulates Bunny on beating the monster, then says that the Enemy has begun its strategy, but stops when she realizes that Bunny isn’t listening and is instead swooning over the tuxedo-clad guy. Just then all the people begin to wake up, not remembering anything. Luna yanks a love-struck Bunny along, telling her they are going home. Bunny, dazed, is still thinking that this is a dream, and a particularly refreshing one: she met a gorgeous guy...
Elsewhere, a short-haired man in a general’s suit is looking at a black crystal ball. He says that he must hurry up, because the Silver Imperium Crystal has become indispensable. The next day at school, Molly is talking about what happened, saying that just as she was about to be attacked, “Sailor V’s partner” showed up and saved her. The other girls just think she was dreaming. As Bunny’s brooch twinkles, Luna hops onto her shoulder and asks what’s wrong, since Bunny is looking annoyed. “It seems it wasn’t a dream...” Bunny sighs.
