~ The Knight Azzo ~
he Knight Azzo lives at Castle Klatka, which is situated in the Carpathian Mountains, in Romania. The Castle, reputed to have been abandoned by human life but haunted for centuries, stands within the lands belonging to the Knight of Fahnenburg, the decendent of a noble Austrian family. The title of the Fahnenburg family is inherited along with the lands and possessions both in Austria and abroad. Every time the new Knight of Fahnenburg visits his castle in Romania he meets the strange and exotic Knight Azzo, who has been living there and roaming the wild surrounding forests for hundres of years.
The Knight Azzo appears to be a man of about 40, tall and extremely thin, His features are bold and daring, although his expression is not in the least benevolent. There is great contempt and sarcasm in his cold gray eyes, and his glances are so peircing that no one can endure his stare for long. His compection is even more peculiar than his eyes; it is neither pale nor yellow, but rather gray, like that of an Indian who has been suffering long from fever, and it is rendered even more remarkable by the blackness of his beard and short cropped hair.
He dresses in knightly clothes, but old fashioned and neglected; there are great spots of rust on the collar and breast-plate of his armor. He carries a dagger and a sword, as do all proper knights.
Although Knight Azzo is apt to accept supper invitations from his neighbors, the Knight of Fahnenburg and his family, he never eats, claiming that his digestion is quite unused to solid food and that he lives entirely on liquids
He likes to be addressed as Azzo von Klatka by those he entertains with his speculations on existential matters. He is drawn most readily into conversations with or in the presence of unmarried, beautiful young ladies, while he is likely to be rude, cold, sacastic, and insulting to the chosen ladie's fiance - or any young man who might dare to challange his wit and strength
The Knight Azzo loves everything that is peculiar and uncommon; he talks to wolves, and even these feirce beasts obey him and become like docile lambs in his prsence. He claims that all things are alike; life and death, this side of the grave and the other have more resemblence, in his veiw, than we might otherwise imagine. He amuses himself with hunting and has been known to spend many a moonless night roaming in the dark forest and marshland surrounding Castle Klatka. He also loves to ride on a horse that never tires in the pale moonlight over hills and dales, through forests and woodlands.
The Knight does not receive or see anyone unless the moon is shining brightly. With strangers he is coldly polite and tends to speak in monosyllables. But from his way of talking, one can detect a deep hatred, a cold detestation of all mankind, with the exception of fair young ladies.
