POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

The faculty has already developed the undergraduate studies, commencing validation from the academic year 1996/1997. Normally the development had to be expanded to the postgraduate studies, to include Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering, Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Engineering, in all Scientific Departments of the Faculty. Ministerial decree no. 194 was issued on 24/2/1998 for the new Postgraduate Curriculum Plan.

The Main Features of The Postgraduate Curriculum Plan

The development of the regulations of the Undergraduate Phase (B.Sc.) depended on a comprehensive advancement of the courses so as to suit the contemporary and future studies. The scientific departments of the Faculty present the Postgraduate Studies on two levels: level 500 for Diploma Students, and level 600 for M.Sc. and Ph.D. Students. The Postgraduate Courses presented from different Department’s form an integral basket, from which the requirements of any postgraduate study are selected. The total Faculty Basket of Courses contains over 1000 course that can be offered according to the needs. It was put into consideration during setting up postgraduate Diploma courses in Engineering, that they strongly relate to the actual demands of the work market. That is why these courses are characterized by its direct connection with the engineering practice, which is the main aim of forming Diploma studies. On the other hand, during setting up the B.Sc. and Ph.D. Courses in Engineering, it was put into account that these courses are of an academic nature. As to the Physics and Engineering Mathematics specialization, it is a condition that the student passes a qualifying study for two academic semesters of total thirty (30) hours: (for those who have not got the B.Sc. in Sciences in addition to the B.Sc. in Engineering).

Diplomas of Higher Studies

The Faculty offers 72 specialized diplomas from all departments. Applicants for a diploma degree must possess a B.Sc. degree in engineering from one of the Egyptian universities or equivalent degree from another recognized institute. Prospective registrants should have been awarded the B.Sc. degree. They should pursue the diploma study program for two years according to the Faculty statute. To be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering, the student has to pass successfully courses equivalent to forty eight (48) hours, divided on four academic semesters. Ain Shams University awards the postgraduate Diploma based on a recommendation from the Faculty Council in one of the following branches:

M.Sc. Degree in Engineering

Ain Shams University awards, upon the recommendation of the Faculty council, the M.Sc. degree in the following fields:

Applicants for enrollment to an M.Sc. Study and research program in the first four fields should pass a B.Sc. degree in the field of specialization with a grade of “Good” at least from a Faculty of engineering of one of the Egyptian universities or another recognized institutes. It is possible to accept students awarded Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering with a general grade of “Good”. In addition, applicants for M.Sc. in the Engineering Physics & Mathematics should successfully completed the special preliminary studies stipulated in the Faculty statute. Prospective applicants should have been awarded the B.Sc. degree one year at least before enrollment. Demonstrators, assistants and the similar are exempted from this condition. M. Sc. students are intended to attend two days at least full time per week and should therefore obtain the permission of their job authorities. Fulfillment of the M.Sc. degree in Engineering necessitates the study of a set of courses totally equivalent to twenty four (24 hours) divided equally on two academic semesters. The regulation determines the requirements of the department to certain courses, which are equivalent to twelve (12) hours, and the rest of the required courses are selected based on the research plan. In addition to the courses, the student has to carry out a scientific research, submitting eventually a thesis containing the results of the research and passing an oral examination.

Ph.D. Degree in Engineering.

Ain shams University awards, upon the recommendation of the Faculty Council, the Ph.D. degree in the following fields:

Application for the enrollment for a Ph.D. degree has to submit the approval of their job authorities for the attendance of at least two days full time per week. he Possess a B.Sc. degree in the field of specialization from one of the Faculties of Engineering of the Egyptian Universities or an equivalent degree from another recognized institute. Fulfillment of the Ph.D. degree in Engineering necessitates the study of specialized courses, totally equivalent to twelve (12) hours that are directly connected to the research subject. After passing the courses assigned to him, the student recorded for the Ph.D. has to then pass a comprehensive test, by appointing a committee to assess his potentials and knowledge in the field of specialization and relevant fields, and to evaluate his competence to attain the Ph.D. degree. Fulfillment of the Ph.D. degree in Engineering requires, besides the two preceding items, carrying out an innovated scientific research which represents an original scientific addition, then submitting a scientific thesis containing the results of the research and passing an oral examination.
