THE LIBRARY

The Faculty library provides a service specially designed to fulfill the requirements of each academic department. It is open for all members of staff of the Faculty for reference use and borrowing. The main library has a shelf space for over 40700 books on all subjects forming part of the Faculty curriculum. It includes 353 technical periodicals (the Faculty receives 23 periodicals yearly regularly), and some 3340 Ph.D. and M.Sc. theses resulted from all Faculty departments’ activities. The students’ library includes multiple copies of textbooks, amounting to over 13000, available for short term loan. According to the Engineering Faculties libraries development project, annexed to the Ministry of Higher Education, the library will be mechanized through the connection to the information network and the Internet to be interconnected with all other engineering faculties libraries all over the country. VTLS library software system has been installed which contains all the modules to provide all library services to the Faculty community. THE MULTI MEDIA HUMAN SKILLS DEVELOPMENT CENTER CAREER 2000 TM The Library is a human resources development program established as a result of a collaborative project between the Faculty of Engineering, Ain Shams University and Knowlogy International Group (Washington DC, USA). The center covers an area of 600 square meters. It includes six laboratories serving English language, computer and business administration. The center offers, with discounted fees for university students, interactive multimedia technology based training courses. This aims to improve the skills of trainees in the areas of English language, computer, and business qualification. This will ultimately improve the skills and proficiency of manpower thus enabling them to seize the opportunities offered by businessmen in Egypt. With such proficiency, the challenges of the new century will be easy to meet. THE INFORMATION NETWORK AND THE INTERNET The Information network of the Faculty of Engineering of Ain Shams University is the oldest network among the Egyptian universities. It started its E mail service in 1989 via the Egyptian University Network, which is hosted at the Supreme Council of Universities. In 1992, the Faculty built its own internal local area network, (LAN) connected to the Internet via the Egyptian universities network. The LAN is based on a tree structure with a thick coaxial cable backbone and thin wires connections to the attached computers. The LAN is covering the main building with three floors. Users can run their applications to the Internet throughout their LAN connections. In 1994, a network room, with ten PC’s is established to serve the Internet applications for all users that don’t have any LAN connection. In 1997, the LAN is redesigned to support structured cabling, switches, hubs, and a terminal server to support dial up services. Now, one hundred dial up users and three hundred Faculty members can access the Internet through the Faculty LAN.
