5.1 The gravedigger is wondering if Ophelia is going to set a certain burial. The gravedigger begins to sing and dig up old bones that are in Ophelia's soon to be grave. Hamlet and Horatio enter and Hamlet is confused by the gravedigger's actions. Then the queen, king, and Laertes come in with Ophelia's dead body. -J.D. The gravedigger's singing disturbs Hamlet. He thinks that his job shouldn't have happy singing. He thinks it is disrespectful to the dead. Horatio explains to Hamlet that the singing helps the job go along quicker. -E.B. Hamlet thinks of the jester that used to be in the kingdom. The jester was more like a father to him then his own father was. Since his real father was always out in war, the jester took care of him. Watching the gravedigger dig up the bones, really made Hamlet think about this. -R.H. 5.2 Guildenstern and Rosencrantz are killed by the king of England, the doings of Hamlet. Laertes stabs Hamlet with the poisoned sword after he drinks some of the wine. The king drinks some of the poisoned wine also, he dies too. Just about everyone dies in this scene. -R.H. Hamlet tells Horatio that he switched the letter the king sent to England. The letter was for Hamlet to be put to death, but he changed the letter with one that says to kill Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Hamlet also tells Horatio that Cladius killed his father. -J.D. Some lord comes and tells Hamlet that the kings wants him and that Laertes wants to have a sword fight with him. Hamlet asks Laertes for forgiveness for killing his father. The king offers Hamlet some poisoned wine, Hamlet says he'll wait for the second match. Everyone except Horatio, Fortinbras, and few other people die in this scene. -E.B. |
