INTRODUCTION TO POWER PLANT DESIGN

Sections: Planning Guide | Design Considerations | Equipment Selection | Problem Statement

Introduction

Power Plant Design is the culmination of an Electrical Engineering studies. It embodies the application of all the theories, not just of electrical nature, learned of subjects under the curriculum. Basically, it is the sum total of applying the principles and theories in mathematics, circuits and transient analyses, statistics, power systems & fault calculations, transmission & distribution, machine design, equipment & devices specifications, engineering drawing, plant opeation & maintenance, and a lot more. On a lighter mode, this course is undauntingly called: the completion of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor in Science in Electrical Engineering.

Objectives. The main purpose of this course is to familiarize the student in applying what he has previously learned from engineering subjects to practical and real-life calculations. After this course, the student should be able to:
1. Define the terms peculiar and essential to the proper understanding of the design.
2. Identify and specify correctly the appropriate equipment or devices to be used in power systems.
3. Distinguish the different distribution systems and explain the theories behind each.
4. Explain the deravation of Load Graph and their interpretation.

Design Considerations

This section lists the basic design consideraitons such as safety, reliability, first cost, simplicity of operation, voltage regulations, maintenance and plant expansion. Click here for the notes.

Equipment Selection

This section discusses what type of equipment and devices should be used and/or specified. This is the application of the theories and principles of Electrical Equipment and Devices, previously taken. A good guide also is an Electrical Handbook and the Philippine Electrical Code. Click here for the notes.
