What is Vermicomposting??
Vermi or worm composting is a natural process where kitchen and garden waste is decomposed into what is often hailed as natures finest form of bio-fertilizer and bio-pest control agent.
The worms which are best suited for vermicomposting are Red Wigglers(Eisenia fetida). These can be ordered from many reliable sources right here in Ontario. See the list of sources which can provide more information and supplies so you can begin your own worm ecosystem.
How Do You Get the Black Gold??
There are a number of ways to harvest your worm castings depending on the type of bin you decide to use. For the bin on this sheet you will need to separate the vermicompost and castings from the undigested material. A key point to remember is that worms dislike the light so will always move away from it! For different bins some of these steps work well:
- shine a light on the worms and they will move to the bottom of the bin - scoop off the top layer
- move contents of bin to one side, fill the empty side with new bedding and food. In a day or two the worms will migrate from the old castings to the fresh bedding. Remove castings.
- Experiment…variations on these methods work well also…get to know your worms!
