at the Rockville relays. His winning throw of 179' 03" broke the E.O.
Smith record of 176' 05" set by Robert Wyand in 1976.

Miller takes third in Decathlon

HARTFORD — E.O. Smith senior Mike Miller had a strong
second day at the CIAC state decathlon at Trinity College,
moving up three places to finish third overall in the 2-day event.
Miller, who finished with 5,837 points, won the javelin (154-11)
on Wednesday while also finishing second in the shot put (42-8) on Tuesday.
Miller’s remaining event performances were 100 meters (12.24),
long jump (18-9), 400 meters (53.96), 110 hurdles (16.47),
discus (113-0), pole vault (11-0), high jump (5-11˝) and 1,500 (5:05).
East Haven’s Robert Coates finished first overall (6,220 points)
with Torrington’s Jacob Eanniello finishing 236 points behind (5,984).
First-day leader Erik Thunberg (Fitch-Groton) was fifth.
Note:
Mike's score in the decathlon is a new school record.
The old mark of 5,394 was set by John Thiel in 1990.

NEW BRITAIN — David Stephens took third overall in the 400 for
E.O. Smith at the Class L outdoor track and field championships
at Willowbrook Park.
The Panthers (22nd overall — 8 points) also received points from
senior Vitaly Theriault, who was seventh in the 3200.
In the girls meet the 4x800-relay team consisting of Melina Benson,
Anna Hankins, Lauren Kilgannon and Beth Rimkus finished seventh
overall for E.O. Smith (24th — 2 points).
Simsbury (girls) and East Lyme (boys) won the respective team titles.

SOUTH WINDSOR — Mike Miller won three events for the E.O. Smith boys in
their 91-59 CCC East loss to South Windsor.
Miller won the pole vault (10-6), high jump (5-8) and shot put (42-4) for
the Panthers (1-2 overall, 1-2 CCC East).
Ethan Tucker (discus, 99-7), Vitaly Theirault (10:59 in the 3,200), David
Stephens (22.98 seconds in the 200) and Doug Ridyard (4:52 in the 1,600)
also won events for the Panthers.
