the prefecture of messinia

Messinia is a prefecture in the Peleponnese, a region of southwestern mainland Greece. It is bordered on the east by Mount Taygetus, on the north by the Neda River, and both south and west by the sea. It is a place where one can get a feeling for the 'true' Greece; a place where time has stood still.

Messinia has beautiful beaches, villages and Venetian fortresses, but is missed by the vast majority of tourists who visit Greece (although they likely have sampled the famous Kalamata olives!). Worthwhile sites for visitors include the port town of Koroni with its Zaga beach and Venetian castle, the town of Methoni with its 13th century fortress and medieval town that was mentioned in the Iliad, the Bourtzi, one of the most photographed structures in the Peloponnese, and the attractive town of Pylos with its well preserved Mycenean palace.
