Personal Background

weird
Up close and personal with me at UC Davis.

I was born and raised in the Kansas City area. The suburb which was my reality for 18 years is called Prairie Village. It's about 10 miles south of downtown on the Kansas side of the state line. I did my undergraduate work at the University of Arizona in Tucson, graduating with a double-major degree in physics and astronomy in May of 1991. In the summer of 1989 I had the opportunity to spend a month at a Russian language program at Moscow and Leningrad State Universities in the former Soviet Union. It was one of the most fascinating trips I have ever made. Of course, the country I visited then no longer exists, in a sense.

After an unhappy and unsuccessful stint in the graduate astronomy program at the University of Texas-Austin, I went back to Tucson and worked for 8 months at an animal shelter. It was during that stint that I came to meet and adopt my cat Mr. B. Also, during that time I applied for and received admission to the graduate atmospheric science program at the University of California, Davis. I packed up my stuff (and my cat) and moved to Davis on Memorial Day weekend in May 1993. I graduated with a Masters in spring 1998, and in August I started a job with Weathernews Inc., where I have worked ever since.

I enjoy many outdoor activities like hiking, backcountry camping, rock climbing, and birdwatching. I also enjoy running, swimming, card games, reading, roller coasters, and weather watching.
