Climbing at Enchanted Rock, Texas

Looking north across Central Texas from halfway up Enchanted Rock.

Me, ascending Mercy Street (5.9). You can tell how old the picture is by the length of my hair. Who IS that freak?!?

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is located about 120 miles west of Austin, Texas, and not terribly far from the birthplace of Lyndon Johnson. This is where all the CenTexans go if they want to climb on some real rock, and when the slimy limestone of Austin just doesn't cut it.

"Cut it", however, is just what the granite of E-Rock does to your fingertips, though. There is pleasure in the pain, except at the end of a long day on the slabs, when you can hardly use a touch-tone phone without wincing. Nevertheless, the variety and quality of routes is reason enough to head out there, especially if you happen to be in the situation (like I was) where Hueco Tanks, the next closest climbing hot spot in Texas, is a 10-hour drive, one way.
