Approximately 4% of all students taking the NMC placement test place into MA161. In 2005 I compared the grades for a large MA161 class vs. the student's placement test results. Roughly half of the class placed into MA161 from the placement test. The other half worked their way up from lower math classes. Every student who placed into MA161 from the placement test received an "A". None of the other half of the students who worked their way up from lower math classes received an "A". One possible reason would be that many students placing into MA161 would have placed into a higher level math class but MA161 is the highest placement the test offers. |
