GURPS

The Generic Universal Role-Playing System was created by Steve Jackson Games.  The system is very realistic, and emphasizes that facet of it.  This is not to say that you can't to fantasy, but this is not a system you use for your basic dungeon crawl.   This system is my personal favorite for games, precisely for that realism, though I could wish that combat wasn't quite so realistic.  You have a high probability of dying if you get in a fight with edged weapons.

This system also lets your imagination run free.  This means you can get mute, albino, water-loving dwarfs (been there, done that) or Japanese computer hacking geniuses with eidetic memory (my roommate's been there, done that).  Some people don't like the fact that you can create characters with such strange quirks.  I like it because that is what makes the characters for me.

Currently, my husband, Tim is running a campaign in his ex-D&D world of Arcadayn.  My character, Darra, is a werehorse priestess of the god of justice and revenge.  She's a little screwed up.  He is also running a supplement to the end of his Cthulhu campaign.   Kitty, my little college cheerleader, has just discovered that her boyfriend Alex is a vampire, and isn't quite sure what to do with it yet.  She also travels to the Dreamlands and has had a couple of adventures there.  The last one included the rescue of a piece of a girl's soul.   This was a little disturbing, since Corolanna had only wanted to be just like Kitty...*sigh*  I have a couple of other characters made up that I may or may not even be able to use, but if I do, I'll be sure to post them.  :)
