LARPs or Live Action Role Playing Games are the kind where you actually get dressed up as your character and you act out the parts. The object is to try and stay as close to your character type as possible. If your character is paranoid that everyone is trying to kill her, then don't go running /towards/ the fight. It's pretty simple. The only problem is keeping it straight whether you are "in-character" (playing your part) or "out-of-character" (playing the real you). It can get very confusing, and if you decide in the middle of a fight that you aren't really there, you will get lots of people mad at you. For the most part, you get cast as a character, i.e., you don't create your own, though this is not set in stone.
I started gaming by LARPing. It was a game called "Etherlines: The Morning After" and I didn't have a clue as to what I was doing. But it was fun! Since then I have been in...uh...26, I think, 3 conventions, GM'd 3, and written 1, called Broadway's on the Rocks, which is in desperate need of revisions. One of these days Anne and I will actually get together at some point and start on the reqriting process. It needs a lot of work, especially on the character development side. *sigh* As you can see I've been well, and truly hooked.
