MOTEL
CALIFORNIA Vocals:
Whitfield Crane Ugly Kid Joe's latest release and the debut album under UKJ's own label imprint, Evilution Records, is marketed and distributed through Castle Records, USA. Checking in on October 15th, MOTEL CALIFORNIA marks the explosive re-entry into the world of rock, hyper-crunch guitars, meaty bass lines and tireless sweaty performances by the every-newsworthy rockers, Ugly Kid Joe. With the UKJ self-produced record, mixed by Butcher Brother's Phil Nicolo, the Kids have taken their career into their own hands. Quotes, Castle Records President, Steve Lerner, "Ugly Kid Joe have done their part and delivered one solid record---there isn't a weak song on the album. In five short years, and over 5 million records sold, Ugly Kid Joe is one of the most successful rock acts of the 90s. Motel California reaffirms their position in the rock arena, and we're focused to bring them back on top." Fronted by lead singer Whitfield Crane and backed by the driving guitars of Klaus Eichstadt and Dave Fortman, along with bandmates Shannon Larkin on drums and Cordell Crocket on bass, once again Ugly Kid Joe has created music to get ugly with. Recorded in the Santa Barbara garage studios of Klaus and Dave on your basic nuts n' bolts 2-inch tape, the pair were able to begin to create what has turned out to be a flawless recording made in the most grassroots of manners. "We recorded about half of the album at home with our own money before we even got the new distribution deal" says Klaus. "We didn't feel like playing the game, we just wanted to just make the best music that we as five people can do. Our new distributor, Castle Records, never got in the way of the recording, they just said, 'Do it your way." And that's what the kids have done on Motel California. Following the double success of As Ugly As They Wanna Be and America's Least Wanted, Santa Barbara's own rockers split amicably with Mercury Records in order to forge the new deal with Castle, and the results are as radical as they want to be. Motel California will prove to be a true rebirth for the cosmic gang of give.
