"The low sedimentation constant and high metal content of this material are indicative of a low molecular weight protein, probably containing a small number of cadmium atoms per molecule. Characterization of this unusual product is in progress". Margoshes and Vallee, 1957

Metallothioneins (MT) are low molecular weight, cysteine-rich proteins with the ability to bind heavy metals, as Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg, Ag, Co... The Research Project of my PhD deals with the relationship between the primary structure (amino acide sequence) of MTs and their metal-binding behaviour, protein folding and chemical and physiological  properties. In this page, you will find descriptions about Metallothioneins, some technologies related to the study of these proteins, a description of my research project, and some useful links and tools in Metallothionein Research. You are strongly recommended to visit the links listed in MT webs.

The objective of this page is to be a usefool tool. All comments and suggestions are wellcome at my mail adress or the guests book .

NEWS!!!

We'll be at 8th European Biological Chemistry European Conference, EUROBIC8, July 2006, Aveiro, Portugal. New results on molluscan MTs.                All Drosophila Metallothioneins are Cu-thioneins, first case reported in metazoans                              MTs from a broad range of phyla contain sulfide ions.                    Plant MTs would fold in one cluster with "hairpin" structure.                       Raman studies with Metallothioneins.                      MT-dimers can be detected by ESI-MS in in-vivo-synthesised aggregates.                     Tetrahymena MT, the first protozoan MT characterised, show special features.                          More information in the NEWS section
