Albert
Whitlock headed up the matte-painting department at Universal
in 1961 with the movie "That touch of Mink"
Before that, it looks like no one was credited as matte
painter at Universal movies. But there was a lot of matte art into those
films. In this page I show some samples of those mattes.
Russell Lawson was in charge of the matte department at Universal before Albert Whitlock. Most of his work was uncredited.
He started at the thirties with Jack
Cosgrove who later became head of matte department at Selznick International
