Bird, Taurasi Finalists for Honda Sports Award for Women's Basketball

STORRS, CT -- Senior Sue Bird (Syosset, NY) and sophomore Diana Taurasi (Chino, CA) are two of the five finalists for the 2001-2002 Honda Sports Award to determine the top woman collegiate athlete in basketball. Vanderbilt’s Chantelle Anderson, Duke’s Alana Beard and Oklahoma’s Stacey Dales are the other finalists.

The winner for basketball after nationwide balloting will become a nominee for the Honda-Broderick Cup, which is awarded annually to nation’s outstanding collegiate woman athlete of the year at the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year Banquet. The banquet will be held this year on June 17 in Dallas, TX, during the NACDA Convention.

Previously, Rebecca Lobo (1994-95), Jennifer Rizzotti (1995-96) and Shea Ralph (1999-2000) have received the Honda Sports Award for Women’s Basketball from Connecticut. Lobo and Rizzotti went on to win the Honda-Broderick Cup for their respective years.
