And then the finals

January 29, 2004 -- Oh oh oh! We're on the edge of our seats. The Australian Open finals are upon us and, as we expected, our favorite Belgian belle of tennis, Kim Clijsters, is in. In the semis, Kim, the Aussie Open's number two seed, took on the tourney's number 22 seed, Switzerland's Patty Schnyder and she defeated her 6-2 7-6.

Kim's road to the semis has been paved with straight set wins. Her quarter final win was over the woman she defeated in the 2003 quarters, Russia's Anastasia Myskina. In the tourney's early rounds Kim defeated Germany's Marlene Weingartner, Italy's Elena Camerin, Russia's Dinara Safinam and Italy's Silvia Farina Elia.

Unfortunately, things didn't go quite as well for our favorite player on the men's side: a finalist at the 2003 Australian Open, Rainer Schuettler lost his first round match at the 2004 tourney.

Style under the Aussie sun
While in Australia, Kim has suited up in slamming new styles from the spring/summer 2004 Freestyle collection. Kim's outfits of choice for Australia include the Freestyle dress in bijou blue, and the tank and skirt in bijou blue or white. She'll lace up the X-point throughout the tourney. Rainer suits up in the Performance polo and short in the hottest red around, Rosso Corsa, and he laces up the men's X-Point in white and Fila navy.

Where's Jennifer?
Unfortunately one of our other superstars (and a two-time Aussie Open winner), Jennifer Capriati, had to bow out of the tourney this year because of back problems. But we're sure she'll be keeping close track of the Aussie action. After all, she'll be back in action very soon.
