LIVE

Formed in York, Pennsylvania in the mid-'80s, LIVE released their first album Mental Jewelry in 1991. With songs like "Pain Lies On The Riverside", "Operation Spirit" and "The Beauty Of Gray", the album went gold. Mental Jewelry was followed in 1994 by Throwing Copper (six-times platinum; four star review in Rolling Stone). "Selling The Drama" , the first single, had become a huge hit on radio and was followed by "I Alone" and "Lightning Crashes". By early 1997, LIVE released Secret Samadhi . "Turn My Head", "Lakini's Juice", "Freaks" and "Gas Hed Goes West" standed out from the album. Recently, LIVE released (Oct 5th) their fourth album called The Distance To Here . The new album is already shaping up as one of the great rock records of the decade. Melodies soar like never before, evident on standout tracks like "The Dolphin's Cry", "Run To The Water" and "They Stood Up For Love".

MENTAL JEWELRY (1991)

  • This album, produced by Jerry Harrison, was basead on the writings of Indian philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti (You are the world).

  • The name of the band, LIVE, was chosen after they had made this album .

  • "Operation Spirit" video.

The LIVE's first video was directed by George Seminara. Its quality looks like a home video with footage from a concert at Chamaleon. Also, the four guys play around a bonfire on the sand. It looks like they're camping out at the beach. The director George told them to take their shirts off and play like a rock stars. Ahah.. This video entered MTV's Buzz Bin.

  • "Pain Lies On The Riverside" video.

Directed by Ron Keith. This video shows the band playing and Ed dancing in a factory... a dark scene and then, to a black and white scene towards the end of the video. It's a funny video.

THROWING COPPER (1994)
  • Once again, Jerry Harrison was the producer of the album.

  • This album says about the frustations of a small town adolescence.

  • It went multi-platinum. In 1995, one year after it is released it is certified double platinum. It goes on to be certified seven times platinum in U.S. and seven times in Canada and Australia.

  • With this album , LIVE was voted as 1995's "Rock Artist Of The Year" at the Billboard Music Awards.

  • In 1996, LIVE appears on the cover of Rolling Stone as Reader's Poll winners for "Artist Of The Year".

  • The album's name was chosen when the band was waiting to play an acoustic and as they're bored, Ed and Patrick went to a sporting goods store and bought some pellet guns and they start shooting at cans and things outside. Then Chad Gracey and Chad Taylor came back and asked them what they had been doing. Ed and Patrick replied " We was just throwing copper". And then, they decided to name the new album as Throwing Copper.

  • "Selling The Drama" video. Directed by Kevin Kerslake and Julia Heyward. They filmed at Rocky Ridge Park, in York -PA... and also in Kadoris Creek (York), where show the guys running into the woods.

  • " I Alone" video.

Directed by Tim Pope. LIVE rushed to make this video because they were on tour. It was a single shot video where the guys are in a ashy scene. It's a very cool video 'cause Chad Gracey is dancing madly. He's not behind his drums with his head down...

  • "White Discussion" video.

The first video of White Discussion was directed by Tommy Glovarelli . The second one was directed by Josh Taft and it was filmed in a small theater, where the director tried to reproduce and capture the emotion of a live concert and show what is so amazing to be in a LIVE concert.

  • "Lightning Crashes" video.

Directed by Jake Scott. This video shows exactly what is in the song. A story about a mother that dies . It has flashes of a woman giving birth and throughout an angel is standing by. Images of a dead woman lying in front of her family, a priest that is praying over the dead woman and a little baby also appear.

  • Some people thinks that "Lightning Crashes" says about abortion!!

  • "T.B.D." stands for the "Tibetan Books of Dead".

SECRET SAMADHI (1997)
  • Jay Healy produced this album.

  • "Samadhi" is a sanskrit word describing the absorption of the divine through meditation.

  • This album was much more abstract and very random than the other two albums.

  • "Lakini's Juice" , the first single, is an ode to the Hindu Goddess of Destruction. It also refers to the power of the women in the Hindu Tradition.

  • A few songs of Secret Samadhi were written in Jamaica.

  • LIVE made their second appearance on Saturday Night Live on February 15, 1997, where they played "Lakini's Juice" and "Heropsychodreamer".

  • "Lakini's Juice" video . Gavin Bowden directed the video. The focus is on the sexual danger sort.

  • "Freaks" was released and a rather freakish video (directed by Paul Cunningham) followed.

  • "Turn My Head" was the third single. LIVE made two videos for this song.

THE DISTANCE TO HERE (1999)
  • Produced by Jerry Harrison.

  • This album talks about a message of universal love, peace and hope . The songs are much more universally appealing than Secret Samadhi.

  • LIVE called the new album "The Distance To Here" because it represents all the experience and all the things the band has gathered over the last ten years.

  • Spiritual quests are sang in this album. This occur via Western ("The Distance") and Estern ("Meltdown") doctrines of religion.

  • "The Dolphin's Cry" was the first single and a very nice video followed. The video was directed by Martin Weisz. A lot of water trucks was used in this video. (The scene that looks that they've been hit by a tidal wave, used 6000 gallons of cold water and all those gallons were shot on the band!!).

  • "Run To The Water" was the second single and a video followed. Martin Weisz produced this video too. It talks about a world that has no water and people are subdued by those that control it.

  • Michael Railton (keyboards) and Adam Kowalczyk (guitar) will join the band on tour, allowing Ed to roam free on stage.

  • "They Stood Up For Love" video. Directed by Kai Sehr and filmed at The Three Sound Studios
