Welcome to the review section for the third series (Grant and, later, McCrea).
The reviews are divided into several individual areas: reviews of DEMON issues (by creators), and reviews of everything else. Like so:
| THE DEMON, first series (Kirby issues) | THE DEMON, second series (Matt Wagner mini) COMING SOON | THE DEMON, third series (Grant, Semeiks and others) | Other titles guesting Etrigan/Blood |
The Demon #2
"Into the Abyss"
by Alan Grant, Val Semeiks, Denis Rodier, Todd Klein, and others too many to name
Welcome to Hell. No, really. Jason Blood--wiped, by Etrigan, of all memory except his own name--is wandering in a state of utter confusion and despair through the Pit. He gets cut, beaten, whipped, forced to run like a little rat in a giant wheel--and then Etrigan comes out to play. He seems happy to be home... and even pays a visit to his dear old mommy.
The Bad and Crazy Opinion:
Very nice cover... good writing, if nothing spectacular. Val's
artwork has never really clicked for me, but I'll admit he draws one delightfully horrid Raan
va Daath.
The Demon #4
"In Loving Memory"
by Alan Grant, Val Semeiks, Denis Rodier, Todd Klein, etc.
We're still in Hades. Jason's still in a state of 'Huh? Someone tell me what the Hell (no pun intended) is going on?' BUT... he now has a friend on his side, for he has found... Harry Matthews!
Only problem is, Harry's been turned into a living cushion by Belial, Etrigan's father. Bummer. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Etrigan continues his diabolical scheming to overthrow Hell's triumvirate, enlisting Belial's help...
The Bad and Crazy Opinion:
Again, nice cover. And it's Harry's first appearance in the form
we all know and love!
The Demon #5
"The Scheme of Things"
by Alan Grant, Val Semeiks, Denis Rodier, Todd Klein, etc.
Join the Revolution! Etrigan is gathering an army from the lowest castes of hell, promising them (as despots always do) that things will be better with him in charge. Meanwhile, Merlin tries to warn Hell's leaders of the danger... but is disbelieved by Azazel and ignored by Lucifer. Jason, however, is finally losing the memory blocks with the help of Harry and a nice little flashback scene.
The Bad and Crazy Opinion:
I liked the flashback of Blood's past. Neat little tidbits.
The Demon #6
"Song of the Demon"
by Alan Grant, Val Semeiks, Denis Rodier, Todd Klein, etc.
The first of the notorious singing issues.... Grant and Company seem to be fond of them. I could do with just one, and it's not this one.
Oh, well. Harry is great, the truly difficult rhyming speech handled adequately, and the artwork is good. Lucifer is basically depicted as a wimp, but this book isn't supposed to be about him, now is it?
Plot summary: Abaddon, Etrigan, Raan Va Dath, and Belial all join forces and kick the rest of Hell's butt. Lucifer surrenders, basically because he 'wants to see what will happen.' And Etrigan delivers much pain to Merlin.
The Bad and Crazy Opinion:
Sing a song of slaughter... Lotta cheap laughs, no real drama.
