Alexander & Laura: News 97

Greetings. We are wishing you all happy holidays and all the best for 1998. Here is a brief synopsis of what we have been doing during the last year.

Before we get into the news... from now on you can always know (and see!) what we are doing because we have our own Internet Web site with monthly news, latest photos, updates, surprises, tips, etc. Alexander spent many hours programming our pages with the latest Internet technologies, including our latest photos and a photo album with all the buttons and selections for different photo themes. Please visit us at www.oocities.org/eureka/8648 anytime! Your entry in our guestbook is always appreciated! If you have email, Alexander's address is czechadee@hotmail.com and Laura's is kralicek@hotmail.com. (If you don't have your own email you can always get one for FREE at www.hotmail.com)

Laura flew back home to Kentucky in March for a few days and to spend time with her father, who was ill. She also visited her college friends in Ohio for their graduation from Antioch College.

Memorial weekend we spent away in the mountains. Ending up in Buena Vista, we got the last room in town and had a wonderful evening, complete with a gourmet dinner. The next day we drove to Canon City. It was a beautiful drive there, and we got to go to the Royal Gorge, the world's highest suspension bridge (1,053 ft., 335 m). We walked over it, we drove over it, we took a tram over it--we're suckers for tourist traps! Colorado is a beautiful state!

Alexander got a great new job and started working at Computer Associates Int'l (CA) in June. Here is some information about the company: Fortune 500 company, 10,000 employees, 160 offices in 40 countries, revenues $4+ billion, stock NYSE CA. CA was rated the best place to work in the entire computer industry by Computerworld. Their NetHaven division is developing Internet sites and commerce. He's the Project Manager for NetHaven in Denver. He went to New York for manager's training for a few days. Now this explains his passion for the Internet and our own Web site, right?

We celebrated his new job with many champagne bottles and a getaway to the spiritual town of Crestone, Colorado for the weekend. We enjoyed the atmosphere, the organic food, and relaxing. We stayed at the Rainbow Bed and Breakfast (B&B).

Alexander was in New Orleans on business to the CA World trade show in July. His company took over the city with 20,000 visitors. It was an eye-opening experience to see how big the company is and how many different products they offer. We tried many different Creole foods; restaurants prepared for Computer Associates visitors special "CA-jun" food; and he also ate an alligator.

We celebrated Laura's 21st birthday (in the USA this means legal drinking and casino gambling age) on a trip to New Orleans she got as a surprise present. We visited the French Quarter, Bourbon street, had lots of great food, drinks, viewed the city from the 33rd floor of a turning restaurant, gambled on a boat, and basically enjoyed discovering another exciting city together. We also went on a swamp tour where the tour guide caught a 3 ft. (90 cm) alligator with his bare hands and brought him on board. It was a fun-filled weekend for both of us.

Laura signed up for college in order to enter the nursing program and is attending Community College of Denver. This will be a good preparation for her long-term goal to become a Naturopathic Doctor of Medicine. Laura's father passed away in June and she flew home for a few days to be with her family.

The summer in Colorado has been nice and warm. We went camping several times and even took both the dog and cat. Laura found a new part-time job with CLE Int'l (Continuing Legal Education) so she has time to go to college.

For the last weekend in September, we stayed at the Hillside B&B in Georgetown, Colorado. We rode the historic steam-powered Georgetown Loop Railroad through the valley. We had a wonderful dinner at the Renaissance, run by a Czech chef. Before leaving for Denver, we drove to Guanella Pass and saw the spectacular colors of changing aspens. It was a terrific and relaxing weekend.

Laura's mother, Anna, flew (for the first time) to Denver to visit us in October and we all drove to Colorado Springs to the Garden of the Gods. Then we continued west through the mountains to Buena Vista and ended up eating a nice dinner in our favorite place, Buffalo Bar & Grill--that was also on Alexander's birthday, the eighteenth.

We received the biggest snow blizzard of the last 15 years with 2 feet (60 cm) of snow and drifts of up to 10 feet (3 m). The entire city of Denver was shut down for 2 days in October, but unfortunately it was on weekend and we didn't miss any work. Darn!

We saw Barnum & Bailey circus and on Halloween we went to see the acclaimed Canadian Cirque du Soleil.

Alexander's company finished its first major project: www.millerstockman.com western wear online catalog with shopping capability.

We went on a 4-day trip to Las Vegas for Thanksgiving, and it was a fun, nice getaway from daily routines. We stayed at the Monte Carlo hotel/casino and enjoyed winning $$ at the single zero roulette table. We saw a show each night and our favorite was Imagine at the Luxor. We rode the New York-New York roller coaster that flips you over upside down first, then you go into a loop--scary!!

Well, that is all from us here in Denver and we again wish you all the best and hope to hear from you by mail or email.
