Penguins
the tune of I'm a Little Teapot
I'm a little penguin,
on the ice.
I think the cold is very nice.
I can hop around
first once, then twice.
I think ice is very nice.
Also, when I taught a penguin unit, we acted out the father
penguins guarding the eggs on their feet while the moms "waddled"
away to eat. We used plastic Easter eggs. The kids enjoyed that!
"I Know a Little Penguin"
To the tune "I'm a little teapot"
I know a little penguin
Who sat on some blocks
He swam in the ocean
And he Climbed on some rocks
He snapped at a seagull
He snapped at a seal
He snapped at a fish
Oh, what a meal!

(I'm a little teapot)
I'm a little penguin
In the sea.
I can swim as fast as can be!
When I catch a fish, just look at me.
I'm as proud as I can be.

On the ice.

Penguins.
I got some of these things out of an old Mailbox Mag.
Using a paper plate make a penguin.
Five penguins
This little penguin has little black feet.
He's a Blackfooted Penguin with feathers so neat.
This little penguin is called an Adeli.
On snow he can walk or slide on his belly.
This little penguin has a few yellow feathers.
He's a Macaroni Penguin. He likes cold kinds of weather.
These big penguins are known as Kings.
And though they can't fly, they can swim with their wings.
This big penguin is the biggest of all.
He's an Emperor Penguin, over three feet tall!
All Penguins are birds, mostly black and white.
Any penguin you see is a beautiful sight!
I make a really cute construction paper penguin with my kids. Good for part
to whole construction. The head is an oval on black paperand the wings are
on black paperin a pointed oval shape. The beak and feet (drawn like you'd
think of feet and beak!) are on orange. The body is an oval with the top
cut off. Several days ago I read of some cute penguin poems- the one that
I use I got from Weekly Reader-

Baby Penguin
Here's a baby penguin
He's hatching from his shell
Out pops his legs.
And then his tail.
His webbed feet he can wiggle.
His flippers he can flap.
And then he wobbles all around.
Now what do you think of that?
Wobble, wobble, wobble, wobble
Look at the penguin go.
Wobble, wobble, wobble, wobble
Look at the penguin go.

Tune of "The Twelve Days of Christmas"
I went to the South Pole and what did I see?
A little penguin baby.
Two penguin friends,
Three penguin girls,
Four penguin boys,
Fire penguin kings!
Six penguins flapping,
Seven penguins swimming,
Eight penguins hopping,
Nine penguins turning,
Ten penguins smiling,
All penguins dancing!

PENGUIN PARADE
Waddle, waddle, waddle
From side to side.
Penguins go a-walking
Slip, slip, slide.

Down to the water
Splash! Splash! Splash!
Waddle from the water
With a rock'n roll
Penguins go parading
On a wintry stroll.
PENGUIN THOUGHTS
Have you ever seen penguins in picture books?
I always smile when I see their looks.
They look like men in their fancy suits,
all black and white from head to boots.
I often wonder when it snows,
Do they freeze their little penguin toes?
Do they shiver and shake in their land of ice?
Sitting on icebergs CAN'T BE NICE!
THREE LITTLE PENGUINS
Three little penguins, dressed in white and black.
Waddle, waddle forward and waddle right back!
Three little penguins, in a funny pose,
They are wearing their evening clothes.
Their suits are black and their vests are white.
They waddle to the left and they waddle to the right.
They stand on the ice and they look very neat,
As they waddle along on their little flat feet.
SIX LITTLE PENGUINS
Six little penguins off an iceberg did dive,
One bumped his beak, then there were five.
Five little penguins swam the ocean floor,
One saw a whale, then there were four.
Four little penguins spun around, whee-ee!
One spun off, then there were three!
Three little penguins, with nothing to do,
One went fishing, then there were two.
Two little penguins, having lots of fun,
One fell of, then there was one.
One little penguin, when the day was done,
Went home to sleep, then there were none.
PENGUINS
Their suits are black and their vests are white.
They waddle to the left and they waddle to the right.
They stand on the ice and they look very neat,
As they waddle along on their little flat feet.
PENGUIN IN A STORM
One little penguin,
Sitting in the snow.
He should have been somewhere
But where he didn't know.
Down came the snowflakes,
Down came the sleet.
The poor little penguin sat
Looking at his feet.
"Coin!" said the penguin.
"Coin!" said his mom.
"Oh!" said the penguin,
That means COME!

Tacky the Penguin ---
ACTIVITIES
oPenguin and iceberg
A great art idea is to take a tray from Duncan Donuts( the ones they put
the coffees in) Turn it upside down and paint it white. ( that is the
iceberg), then take a toilet paper roll and paint it black and white.
Add the feet by
cutting out black construction paper and gluing it on. Add the beak and
eyes. Glue the penguin(toilet roll) to your iceberg. My kids usually
end up naming their penguins.
o"Iceberg Exchange"
Pretending to be penguins on icebergs, the children are grouped into 3's
in a set of circles. Other children are placed outside the circles.
At the sound of a whistle, all children in the circles must change into
different "icebergs." The penguins on the outside try to secure a
position on an iceberg, but there can never be more than three penguins
on one iceberg. These restrictions will require cooperative
communicating by the children. oUse a grocery bag and orange
construction paper to turn yourself into a penguin! Slit the front of
the bag from the top to bottom. Cut a neck ho;e in the bottom of the
bag. Cut wing-shaped flaps in the sides. Color the bag black and
white to resemble a penguin. Form a cone from a triangular piece of
orange construction paper. Staple it together and punch a hole in each
side. Tie a 12-inch piece of string through each hole. Place the cone
over your nose like a beak and tie the strings together at the back of
your head. Now put on the bag and join in the...Penguin Parade!! (see
below) oUsing a large are such as a gym, the students can act out the
story of the penguin in a storm as it is being read by the teacher. At
the end, all students can huddle for a hug. Discuss why penguins huddle
and the way they mutually help each other when in a storm. (Penguins
huddle for warmth, the centre of the huddle being at least 10 degrees
warmer than at the fringe. As a penguin at he outside of the huddle
becomes cold, he wiggles his way into the centre to warm up.) oOur first
grade last year studied penguins and found some of them keep the eggs on
their feet--- perhaps all do, not my area:) They had their penguin
children pretend to be hatching their eggs and the children spent the
day with large plastic eggs on the top of a foot. They held them in
place by wearing a sock. The kids love it. oPenguins can be made from
plastic pop bottles and styrofoam balls for heads. They also can be
made from toilet paper rolls. Once I heard of a teacher that made igloo
from gallon milk jugs. She put them together with a glue gun.

Paper Bag Penguin:
Make tracers for the face, chest , feet, wings and beak.
Face is a black rectangle with rounded ends to fit on folded part of
bag
Chest is black rectangle to fit on long bottom part of bag, then an
elongated white heart shape to paste over it.
Beak is two orange shapes like this
xxxxxxx
x

like a rectangle with a triangle at one end.
Then two orange webbed feet.
Two eyes
Wings are wing shaped - have them design their own
Place face on top folded part of bag. Glue on eyes.
Put on beak on top of fold and other on bottom of fold.
Wings at the side on the back.
Feet folded and pasted on the INSIDE of the bag so only webbed toed
show.
Penguin Story
Make Penguin shapes and paste squares on paper on them for kids to

Penguin Puppet
Fold a black construction paper into a long roll. (Hot dog roll, that
would
be!!!)
Paste two black wings to the back.
Elongated white oval for tummy.
Little orange feet as paper bag penguin.
Make the beak a long rectangle with triangle ends at either end. Fold
it
twice so that there is about 1/2 inch to glue beak onto face.

Tada!
The books "Tacky the Penguin" and "Three Cheers for Tacky" by Helen
Lester are two of my kids' favorite books. They especially love the
first Tacky. One thing we do is dress up penguins they made (using
patterns) with wallpaper samples so that they come up with more wild
outfits for him. (In the book he has on a flowered shirt). This book
also ties in nicely with friendship and how it's okay to be different.
Another fun activity is to make thumbprint penguins. The students can
put them on a piece of white paper and write number sentences to go
with
them.
Unhappy South Pole Penguin
Unhappy South Pole Penguin
You are in a nasty mood
As you try to chew your dinner
Which refuses to be chewed
But a simple undertaking
Will improve your attitude
You must first defrost your dinner
For your dinner's frozen food!
A Question About Penguins
When do penguins change their clothes?
They must have others. I suppose
Can it be that they're always dressed
In party clothes, that can't be messed?
Gathered in suits of black and white
Perfect for some formal night
Do they expect a king or queen
To grace their distant glacial scene?
It would make me feel much better
If I knew they each owned a sweater.
Let's Hear it for Antarctica
Antarctica, Antarctica,
Let's hear it for Antarctica
Lots of mountains, lots of sea
Nice and cool, don't you agree?
Lots of snow and lots of ice
If you like winter, sure is nice
Lots of shrimpy beasts called krill
If you're a whale you'll eat your fill
Lots of tasty fish to fish for
All a hungry seal could wish for.
Lots of ice floes. lots of rocks
The perfect place for penguin flocks
Lots of icebergs, crystal blue
Lots to see and lots to do
I think the South Pole is really neat
What better place to beat the heat?

PENGUINS ON THE MOVE
Penguins, penguins, black and white
cannot use their wings for flight.
Penguins, penguins, do not care.
They just ________ from here to there.
Can you do what penguins do?
Can you move by _________ too?
Place each line of chant on sentence strips...make word cards for the
blanks.
Words cards:
swim swimming
slide sliding
hop hopping
waddle waddling
dive diving
Activities:
1) Identify animal movement words (verbs) & substitute into poem.
2) Compare verbs with corresponding words ending in "ing."
3) Find rhyming words...list each on separate chart paper...add other
words
that rhyme.
4) Count the number of sentences (do they notice that the 2nd line is
a
continuation of the first line?
5) Identify each sentence beginning and ending.
6) Act out poem by performing the penguin movements.
7) Brainstorm other "penguin movements."
8) Each student makes one page for a class booklet...using the poem
and
drawing the picture.Times
------------------------------------
Activities for "On Top of An Iceberg"
1) Place each line on a sentence strip (I use posterboard cut into 2
inch strips...works better & durable). Number the strips on the back.
Use different colored marker for the talking parts that are in
quotation marks.
2) After teaching each sentence...then handout strips to students.
Have them line up according to their number on the back of the sentence
strip...or divide sections of the poem into readers theater parts.
3) Place all sight words on large index cards. Either handout one
index per student ...or have volunteers draw an index card from a
pile...match sight words to poem.
4) Locate rhyming words
5) Count how many words are the same...how many words are 2 letter
words, 3 letter words, 4 letter words, etc...make chart of the
words...this really gets them looking closely at the words.
