Tourists are
being drawn to the rare beauty of these pristine locations in increasing
numbers.
Australia was known to early explorers
and traders such as the Asian, Portuguese and Dutch. An important link
with Spain was made in 1846 when Spanish Benedictine monks arrived in the
new Colony of Western Australia, which was founded 20 years before. A Mission
was established in the bush at New Norcia some 140 kilometer from Perth.
Contact was made with Aborigines to christianise and train local tribes.
The Benedictine Order is still in residence in the Abbey at New Norcia
which attracts numerous visitors to its heritage precinct.
Australia is a land of opportunity
with great resources both natural and human, but it is not with out problems.
Like other countries it is showing the affects of overseas ownership, globalisation
and privatisation. It is currently racked by debates on the rights and
position of aborigines in the wider community. Consideration is being given
to declaring Australia a Republic by the year 2000.
Australia is a major exporter of meat,
wool, wheat and minerals and has a sound though limited manufacturing base.
This includes automobiles, steel and heavy industry. Within the service
industry Australia has developed sophisticated equipment and products particularly
in engineering, education, information technology, health, sport and recreation.
These are supported by qualified personnel who contract their skills to
overseas countries.
As the 21st century approaches Australia
will face new opportunities and challenges and must developed its own unique
solutions to meet the needs and aspirations of the Australian people.
