Reptiles slowly evolved from amphibians. They first appeared
in the fossil record of the Carboniferous period, more then 280,000,000 years ago. Reptiles became dominant animals on land during the Mesozoic period 240 million to 65 million years ago. They could live in deserts, swamps, forests, grasslands, rivers, lakes and even the air and the sea. This period was later known as the Age of Reptiles. The most spectacular of all reptiles of course is the universally known dinosaurs.
