Episode 1:
Angel Attack Review for Episode 1 | Review for Episode 2 Shinji Ikari is called by his father who he hasn't seen in 3 years to Tokyo 3, and at the same time an Angel, a large super being that is invisible to conventional weapons starts to attack the city. He is picked up and driven away from the violence by Misato Katzuragi and taken to Nerv Central (the base of the U.N.'s organization called Nerv) where he is told to pilot the biomechanical Evangelion Unit 01 and destroy the angel. He refuses to pilot at first until he realizes that the other person capable of piloting the Eva, Rei, is in no condition to do so, and that the Eva is willing to protect him. The episode ends with him being launched inside the Eva to do battle with the angel. Even though Genesis 0:4 is supposed to be the best tape I can't see why anyone would skip seeing this video. It does make a clear description of how the story is going to evolve around Shinji, and we do find out that this is sci-fi that is not going to be based completely around action (the violence type). It seems that every character is definately going to play a huge part in the story. Episode 2: Unfamilar Ceiling/The Beast Review for Episode 1 | Review for Episode 2 Shinji wakes up in a room at Nerv Central after we see his Eva being pounded on by the angel, but we do know that some how the angel was defeated. He meets up with Misato to get his lodging assignment which places him in single quarters, but Misato feels he needs somebody to be with and chooses to take him in. After the two get setteled in and Misato's pet penguin is introduced. Shinji is alone in his "lovely sweet" remembering the battle with the angel. After getting a hole put through the head of his Eva, it rises, regenerates its damaged areas, and start to pound on the angel until it self destructs. The episode ends with Misato realizing that she was only thinking that Shinji was only a tool instead of a person, so she decides to tell Shinji that he did a noble thing and should be proud of himself. I consider it the weaker the two episodes on the tape. Its intention was strictly to let us know what Shinji is truly like. Loser comes to mind, but that may be to harsh a term. The episode does do a great job on making us wonder what the character of Rei is like, but Misato, until the end of the tape, is only a comical character, but I still feel we can tell that she is a caring and a much deeper character. If they had a third episode that was like the first on the video, this episode would have worked better as a relaxing break from the style of the first episode and maybe it was meant to be like that, but I won't find out till Episode 3: The Phone that never rings.
