The Sacrifice

My name is Rachel. I'm an Animorph, it means animal morpher, we change into animals and fight the Yeerks. But thats all over. We won. Well, five of us won. We as in Jake, Cassie, Marco, Tobias, Ax and me. How can I change? Well, it all started with this Andalite, Prince Elfangor, he gave us the power. The power to change into anything we want, the power to morph. It's really cool morphing things like a bald eagle, I love that morph, flying and diving, or a grizzly, so strong and powerful .... But here I am going on about how cool it is to morph when I should be telling you what happened in our last battle...

We all stood there amongst the carnage. Cassie was crying, so was Tobias. Everyone was sad, we couldn't believe it had happened. I heard a groan, then silence. I looked up to see Visser Three moving slowly, painfully. 'Ha! Suffer you creep.' Tobias and Cassie had struck him down after .... I looked at Ax and shuddered. Poor Ax, he was only protecting Tobias. But, now .... I tried not to think about what had happened. 'Don't torture yourself Rachel.' Marco shook his head, he was bent over Visser One. A very dead Visser One. Jake had killed her after she .... No. I couldn't think about it. It wasn't true, it was a nightmare, it had to be. But, I knew it was true. Ax was dead, none of us could escape that fact. Tobias had told us what had happened but I just couldn't understand why. Why did he do it? None of us knew. It was not like I couldn't remember. It was because I could, it was so hard to blot out the memories. I just wished that somehow we were able to stop Visser One. I thought back to what had happened I still couldn't believe it but ......

We had fought down to this last battle. Visser One and Visser Three were surrounded by 20 Hork-Bajir. "Okay lets do this." Jake muttered. We all morphed. Jake to his tiger, Cassie and Tobias to wolf, Marco to gorilla, Ax demorphed, and I morphed my grizzly. Then we charged. I slammed into two Hork-Bajir with Jake slashing on one side, and Tobias on the other. Marco was knocking down any Hork that dared to get too close. Cassie was attacking anything that was close enough. And Ax was cutting off Hork-bajir heads. Then I realized Tobias wasn't beside me anymore. Infact he was in the middle of Visser One and Three. Visser One was just about to dracon him.
<Nooo!> We all stood there, as Visser one slowly leveled the Dracon beam at him.
Then there was a blur of blue, and stab of red as the dracon beam hit it's target.
'Tobias.' But .... he was fine. He and Cassie then went after Visser Three, who tried to run but was too slow. Jake leapt at Visser One. Then I heard Tobias speak.
<Ax?> We all demorphed at that one word. I then saw what had happened. Ax was laying on the ground with a huge dracon wound on his side. He opened his eyes, looked around, looked up at us and smiled. What he said then I'll never forget. His voice was sad, but his words caught all our hearts as he spoke them.
<At least we won.> His eyes closed and he was gone. He had sacrificed his life for Tobias, and for this planet.
