Why Animorphs Struck Gold 7/15/99. A few years ago, when a book called Animorphs The Invasion hit the bookstores, many kids and teenagers alike instantly became hooked. The book series became so popular that it entered the top 10 chart and stayed there. It's selling more than Goosebumps and is said to be a cause of the Goosebumps' decline. How did KA manage to creat this big hit? There have been lots of sci fi books in the bookstore before Animorphs, but KA still manage to get the attention of readers. There are a few reasons for this. Firstly, books published by Scholastic are usually guarenteed at least a reasonable number of reader because of all the advertisements and brand name of Scholastic. But why aren't other Scholastic sci-fi not as popular? KA sort of captured the feeling and wishes of kids nowadays and make it come true in the books. All of us have wished we can do something special. We have wished to become a certain animal that we like. We all have asked ourselves whether there are aliens out there, where they are, and what they're doing. I think the creativity is the key of Animorphs' big success. The morphing is new in most sci-fi and so are the appearence of the aliens and the way they enslave people. In most sci-fi, we feel that we know what's going to happen, like everthing is going according to a formula. But in Animorphs, everything is new, we don't know what's going to happen, and KA always leaves some cliff hanger to keep us coming back. This creates a sort of interaction between KA/the books and the readers. Even though most of them never talked in person, their wishes and thoughts, which KA herself experienced in her childhood, are all there in the book. That's why some of us find ourselves lost in the books and sometimes the aliens world. It's like a dream come true for us. And then KA keeps in contact with the webmaster some Animorphs fan sites, this real interaction can make us feel comfortable with KA and the books and create the feeling of an Animorphs community on the web. But while creativity and interaction is the cause of Animorphs success, the lack of creativity can cause the Animorphs' decline. Luckily, through interaction, we can all help by throwing in our own ideas. This way, we can help continue the success of Animorphs. Now Animorphs is not only KA's series, it's ours too.
