Prologue

Joshua Scott Chasez and James Lance Bass met when Josh was ten, when his family moved in next to the Bass’. Although almost three years younger, Josh and James quickly became best friends. The friendship came as a surprise at first to James because he was always considered a nerd at school for being so smart and had few friends. Josh however became the most popular guy in school, everybody loved him and more than once James wondered why Josh was friends with him. Over the years however James began to understand why Josh liked him so much and that reason was love.

It started when James had been thirteen. He was mortified when Josh caught him kissing a gloss photo of Harrison Ford dressed as Indiana Jones, he was so scared that he was going to lose his best friend. Josh however pulled James into a tight hug and whispered to him that it was okay for him to like guys. At first James didn’t believe him however a few weeks later Josh told James that he was also gay, from then on James knew that every thing was going to be okay.

Although they were both gay, the pair didn’t start any relationship until a year later and even then they hid it for another six months before they finally told their parents. At first Josh’s parents were concerned that Josh was dating someone three years younger than himself since they adored James like he was their own and didn’t want him to get hurt. However they knew that Josh would take good care of James, not pressure him into anything and never break his heart.

James’ parents however weren’t nearly as supported screaming and yelling at Josh and James accusing Josh of corrupting their son. After a long talk with Josh’s parents however they were somewhat more calm and promised they would try and be supported of James’ decision.

For two years Josh and James dated, making love for the first time on James’ sixteenth birthday. James had started to believe that they would be together forever, until Josh broke the news to him a few months later.

“UCLA offered me a full scholarship,” he whispered to James one night as they were curled up together on the Chasez’s couch watching Star Wars again together. “I need to take it. I can’t afford anywhere else.”

“What?” cried James pulling away from his boyfriend. “Why can’t you go to some community college around here then you can save money by living at home.”

“That’s the other thing I have to tell you,” whispered Josh fighting back his tears as he stared into James’ green eyes. “My parents told me today that they’re moving back to Maryland. The only reason we moved here in the first place is because they transferred dad here but now they’re transferring him back. The choices are go to UCLA or go somewhere near Bowie.”

“When are they moving?” whispered James, his tears slowly falling down his face. He wanted to be mad at Josh but he knew that Josh had nothing to do with it.

“August,” replied Josh gathering James in his arms needing to touch his boyfriend. “They want to move before school starts for Heather and Tyler but they thought it wouldn’t be fair to move earlier in the summer since you and I won’t see each other very much once the move happens.”

“Much? I won’t see you at all!” sobbed James into Josh’s chest. “You’ll be going to Maryland for the holidays and you’ll spend most of the summer there. We’ll be lucky if we get to spend a few weeks together!”

“We’ll work it out baby,” whispered Josh kissing James’ forehead. “We’ll work something out.”

In the end James decided for both of them that it would be easier if they just broke up. Josh agreed since that was what James wanted but he at least wanted them to keep in touch. James however wouldn’t allow that saying that it would be too hard. Josh didn’t understand at first then he realized that it would be too hard for James to sit there and listen to Josh talk about some guy he met, just as it would be equally as hard for Josh to listen to James talk about the current guy he was dating. So in the end it was decided that they would go their separate ways, remembering each other . . . forever.
