Casket

Casket was formed back in 1990 in south-west Germany with the
same line up as today. The band members knew each other from
school these days - and we all listened to bands like Slayer,
Sodom, Destruction, Kreator, Holy Moses, Pestilence, Entombed,
Death, etc. which (among others) inspired our interest in playing
together in a band.
Since these days we released 4 Demo tapes and 1 CD called
"Under the surface" which has been released this year.

1.Who are the band members:The line up consists of Marinko (26) at the drums, Gleibs (24) on
guitar, Susi (25) at the bass and Schorsch (25) (that's me) handling the vocals and a guitar.

2.How did you got your name and what does it means:Casket is a synonym for "coffin", the (mostly wooden) case where most of us will end (except for those who want be get burned after they deceased). As we intended to play death metal from the very beginning, I thought the name would fit to the intention of the music because a casket has a very close corresponding to death.

3.What music stile do you play and compare it to some similar bands:Casket plays death metal. I fear that it's hard for ME to compare our style with other bands. But according to some reviews we play "old-school death metal" in the vein of GRAVE or other well known death metal pioneers. As I mentioned above, I wouldn't agree to any comparison because I think we have our own individual style. I hope you agree with me after listening to the CD is sent you ...

4.Some of your favorite groups:I listen to a mixture of different bands, playing a different style of music. Some of them are e.g.: Carcass, Morbid Angel, Death, Asphyx, Grave, SFU, Cannibal Corpse, Monstrosity but also e.g. Crowbar, Primus, or old Jimi Hendrix recordings, haha !

5.Your opinion about underground and commercial music scene:In my opinion, the frontier between the underground and the commercial music scene seems to get more and more transparent. I think no one should sell his music just to fill the
pockets of the music industry which seems to control the people by predicting which song will get a hit or is shit.I give a dirty, rotten "fuck you" for this music-business who only think in dollars.

6.What was the biggest success of your band:I think our last CD-release received the most impressing reviews
and reactions from all kind of zines or distributions. Our third demo-release (called "Endtime") got similar response but today you seem to be "old-fashioned" if you dare to send a tape to the zines

7.How many concerts did you played and by your opinion what was the best:We played about 20 gigs so far. But the last one must have been 3 years ago or so ... so I don't remember it anymore, haha !The most gigs have been under poor circumstances, therefore we aren't very hot to play live again. Maybe the scene is refreshing some day and we can play more attractive concerts in the future, but all in all it's not so important for us to be on stage.

8.The favorite song you made and why:
Hmmm - what a question ! I can recommend you "Dismal Philosophy" or "Warhammer" from our latest CD for example. But I have to admit that I have no personal favorite song. Ok, I think that some songs are better than others - but each has its own personal touch.

9.Where you on some local radio show (or something like that):
Not located here in Germany - but our songs are played on some really cool radio stations in France and Poland as well as in the USA. I hope that your country also gets what it deserves - I like it when our songs can be heard by a wide audience.

10.Do you think that underground music need more attention of media and what is your opinion about big music televisions and radio stations(such as MTV,Viva.....):I don't think that the underground music should be "pushed" by the
media ! If it would, it won't be underground anymore ... many really good and promising bands got too successful in a short time - and after a while noone remembered them anymore. I think a band should not be judged by the amount of sold CDs or shit like that - that's what the media want's us to believe. But the only thing that counts is the music - no video, sex hungry groupies or respective radio stations playing one song 10.000 times a day. That all sucks like nothing else sucked before!

11.Do you have support of local metal fans:I know some people who either play in a band, too or are writing for metal fanzines or something like that. But I won't entitle them as "die hard casket fans". A reason for this is our advanced age I think. Years ago, there have been Casket fans in our hometown - but today they all have jobs, family or just don't listen to death metal anymore ... it's the way things are developing.

12.Plans for the future:We'd like to release some new material on a picture single or something like that. But as we are all working (besides playing in a band) that all can last some months I think ! In the meantime we try to convince as much people as possible to listen to the CD we released this year and sell it. As we are a non-profit organization, we sell it for the production costs ... just to make some advertisement here ...

13.Say something for the end:Thank you very much for interesting questions and the possibility to beeing interviewed in your magazine. We are proud beeing interviewed in a fanzine released in Yugoslavia as some of the band members have their roots in this part of the world and you've been the first one getting in touch with CASKET. I wish you and your readers all the best for the future - keep on supporting the underground and have much success with EXTREMERON.
